Weston College’s first team recorded a narrow victory at Richard Huish College in the Elite League.

WESTON College 1st XV continued their debut season in the Elite League with a trip to local rivals Richard Huish College.

Weston started the game with a host of individual errors, dropping the kick-off which led to Huish going over in the corner from a driving line-out. Moments later, the hosts again turned Weston over and scored again.

Weston hit back with great offloading and interplay between forwards and backs and winger Jacob Swain touched down to get Weston back in the match.

Weston piled on the pressure which led to a penalty kicked to the corner. After a clean catch and drive, skipper Tom Sugg grabbed Weston’s second of the afternoon. Huish hit back with another try to lead 17-10 at the break.

Huish started the second half the strongest, scoring another try. Weston found another gear and their superior fitness began to tell, scoring three unanswered tries through captain Tom Sugg, Jake Powell and Danny Bailey, putting Weston 27-24 up with minutes to play.

Huish missed a penalty kick with the last play of the game, which handed Weston College a hard-fought victory. Man of the match was Weston’s No 8 Sam Bate.

Weston move on to Wells Blue School, their opponents for the first round of the National NatWest Cup.

WESTON College’s netball first team travelled to Strode College and were well beaten.

Their build-up play was effective in parts, but the execution in the final third of the court was the difference between both teams.

The team has some talented athletes that are adapting well to the level of competitive college sport. The valuable lesson in how to turn pressure into points is a key factor. Player of the match was Stephanie Thompson.

THE College’s football team travelled to Bridgwater College and Jared Ford scored first to give Weston a well-deserved lead.

Three minutes later, Lewis Chappell scored with a superb half-volley from outside the box to put Weston 2-0 up. On the half-hour, Bridgwater pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 at the break.

The second half kicked off and Nathanial Groom scored straight away with an excellent strike, but Bridgwater replied with a goal of their own.

In the 90th minute, Ford was brought down by a defender for a penalty. Alex Camm kept his cool and placed the ball in the corner to make the final score 4-2 to Weston.
