WESTON bowed out of this season’s Somerset Premier Cup competition when they were beaten by their Evo-Stik Southern Premier opponents.

Fielding a much-changed side from that which picked up a Blue Square South point at Billericay, were outplayed in the second half and Frome deservedly won.

Kayne McClaggon led the home attack and tested Frome keeper Ollie Chenoweth on nine minutes in Weston’s first attack.

At that stage, Weston looked in control, but on 19 minutes Frome took the lead when Lewis Powell was tripped and he picked himself up to score from the penalty spot.

Weston were level on 27 minutes when Naby Diallo’s shot took a wicked deflection and looped over Chenoweth and the home side took the lead four minutes later when Pete Monks’ cross from the left was knocked past Chenoweth by defender Matt Smith as McClaggon closed in.

Frome drew level on 53 minutes when a Weston defender handled and Powell converted his second penalty and Powell struck again on 62 minutes with a fine strike from the edge of the area.

A minute later, Weston forced the first of nine corners when Nat Pepperell’s low effort was turned behind by Chenoweth’s legs. Minutes later, Pepperell had to go off with a nasty head injury and will be a doubt for Saturday’s FA Trophy game at Salisbury.

Frome increased their lead on 68 minutes when Powell completed his hat-trick with a superb volley from 12 yards after Mike Perrett robbed the home defence wide on the left.

Four minutes from time, Frome were awarded a third penalty when Dean Evans was tripped, but with Powell just substituted, former Weston favourite Dave Gilroy took the kick and this time, home keeper Lloyd Irish guessed correctly and saved the shot.

Two minutes into lost time, McClaggon pulled a goal back for Weston in a scramble from Dayle Grubb’s corner.
