Weston slumped to their third consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of Ashcott & Shapwick.

Another disappointing weekend with the bat saw Weston slump to their third consecutive defeat at home to Shapwick and Polden.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Weston’s opening bowlers, Charl Willoughby and Tom Chambers (7-1-20-1) got off to their usual economical start, reducing Shapwick and Poldon to 19-1 off nine overs.

Shapwick’s opener, Steve Tinnion made a quick fire 45 before falling to Ash Allen. Shortly after, Allen removed their number three, before Shabel Ahmed struck, leaving Shapwick on 92-4 in the over after drinks.

Another wicket fell soon after to Willoughby putting Weston on top of the game, but then Ackland (45) and Edmunds (45) put on an excellent stand of 88, absorbing the pressure and picking off runs.

Willoughby finally removed Edmunds, soon followed by Haggett to achieve figures of 10-4-25-3, as Shapwick finished on 222-8, a good total on what has been a low scoring ground so far this season.

Another lacklustre display in the field and some mid-innings indiscipline with the ball saw the chance to capitalise on an excellent start missed.

Weston had a nightmare first over. With usual opener Andy Fear unavailable, injured keeper John Davidson opened with Tom Ford and was left stranded as Ford risked a risky single on the fifth ball.

Ahmed fell on the next ball to leave Weston 1-2. It was always going to be an uphill struggle from that start, especially when debutant Alex Hart and Ford fell shortly afterwards. From 15-4 off seven overs, captain Chris Davidson led a small fight back before again failing to convert a good start, edging behind for 29 with the score 56-6.

Allen hit 12 and Willoughby a quick 13 off 10 balls, but the final outcome was never in doubt and Weston were all out for 102 in 41 overs.

Weston risk being dragged into a relegation battle if they don’t return to winning ways, and a number of players need to question their effort and contributions in recent weeks.

Basic mistakes and a lack of discipline have seen games turn from good positions, to comprehensive defeats. Forte Financial man of the match was Charl Willoughby.

This week Weston travel to table-toppers Bedminster.
