The Weston Golf Club pairing of Sally Irlam and Susan Tate won the Generation Cup, a county event played at Wedmore.

WESTON came out on top in a recent county event, the Generation Cup, which was held at Wedmore.

The competition is for a lady and a junior and was organised by Annya Patten (Somerset second team county captain) and Sally Irlam (Somerset president-elect). The event was won by Irlam and junior Susan Tate with 40 points, with Jade Cope and Wedmore’s Deidre Wheadon beaten on countback.

Hopefully, more pairs will enter next year, the talent on display certainly bodes well for the future of Somerset golf.

Weston Avalon B team travelled to a blustery Minehead, who put out their lowest handicap team of the season, a sign of respect to a fellow links course. However, Weston were blown away losing 4-1 with the only winners being the father/son pairing of Dave and Jack Radcliffe, who incidentally were the only winners in the reverse fixture.

The pairings of Andy Skinner and John Greaves, John Lancaster and Tim James, Andy Smith and Steve Ham and Gary Homer and Steve Corrick all lost before the 18th.

? WORLEBURY Golf Club held its annual Cockrow competition and as the name suggests, the event started with a 6am shotgun start.

The format was four-ball betterball and after a fine start, heavy downpours and high winds made it tough going for the full field. A hearty breakfast served up by Worlebury catering team as part of the event awaited all competitors in the clubhouse before the prize giving.

Results: Mark Otterburn and Terry Bradley 43 pts; Pete Wyatt and Jim Skinner 42; Adie Wait and Rob Bartlett 41; Andy Horsburgh and Martin Philp 41.

Cardiff band, the Soul Miners played at the Captains Summer Bash, when a full clubhouse sat down to an excellent buffet.

Club captain Jim Sutherland gave a short speech to introduce all members and guests, before the lights went down and the seven-piece outfit played a great set with the dance floor filled almost from the first track through to the last.

It was an excellent night for all guests and congratulations must go to all committee members and staff for making it a memorable evening.

The seniors welcomed Lansdown for a league fixture. The section, easily the form team in the club, showed their class again with a 5-2 victory.

The first team travelled to Kendleshire, but were beaten 5-0 against the undefeated and strongest side in the division.

There is a golf introduction afternoon on Saturday run by coach Sarah Burnell, for any ladies who would like to give the game a try.

? CONDITIONS were perfect at Wedmore for the seniors’ medal, which was also the first round of the seniors’ championship.

In Division 1, half the players were under handicap and three players recorded net 62s. Finishing third on countback was Tony Hoskings. Peter Laney won the medal with a lifetime best of gross 78, but the round of the day came from the player in second place, John Russell.

He set a new seniors’ record of level par 70 which could have been better without bogeys on two of the last three holes.

In the other divisions, David Hollingdale took Division 2 ahead of Tony Metcalfe and Peter Spinks, while in Division 3 Colin Pinks with an excellent 63 won from Malcolm Timmis and Alan Shiner.

Despite this excellent scoring, the 24 players who made the cut for the second round of the championship knew they would have to play exceptionally well to catch Russell.

This never looked likely, and although not achieving the heights of the first round, a gross 80 was always good enough for him to retain the title. His total of 150 was the best ever winning score.

The runner-up spot went to Tony Glover, who had been in fourth place after a 78 in the first round, but the same score was good enough to pip Martin Easton for second by a single shot.

There was plenty of consolation for Easton, though, as his second round 80 was still well below handicap and secured him the Net Trophy with an aggregate of 129, 11 shots below par.

This was harsh on Alan Shiner who added a net 63 to his first round 67 to leave him a shot further back, but good enough to win the best net in round two. The best gross prize for the second round went to Mike Atkins. His 82 made him one of the few players to improve in round two.

? THE Open Championship pairs’ event is always a popular event at Brean and despite poor conditions, many support it.

Each entrant draws a player who competed in the final round of the Open Championship at Sandwich and then their scores are added together to find a winning pair.

With both courses suffering from windy conditions, most pairs were hampered by one high score. The winning pair managed to avoid the high scores and they were Mike Porter and Phil Mickelson on 139 with Porter’s contribution being 71. Three pairs tied on 141 with Steve Jones and Lucas Glover taking the runners-up spot by virtue of Jones’s best of the day nett 67 at Brean.

Scoring was good when the seniors’ Stableford was up for grabs last week. A large field of 39 players teed it up, but just two players broke the 40 point barrier. Both Bill Griffin and John Sherwood returned 41 points and had to be separated by countback and Griffin’s superior inward nine score was enough to secure the victory. Barry Tucker completed the top three on 39 points.

Recent weeks have seen Brean’s Avalon League Division 6 promotion charge suffer after a couple of disappointing results. This week saw another one added to that list as they lost to Stockwood Vale at home by 4-1.

The poor weather meant only a few ventured out in the Pro Shop Stableford on Saturday and congratulations go to Ron Vine for his 37 points, which saw him take victory ahead of Roy Baker on 34.
