Over 120 players defied severe weather warnings of heavy rain, thunder and lightning to compete in the Anthony McEvoy Memorial Trophy at Weston.

The event, held in memory of Weston's favourite Irishman and captain, saw a host of 40-point cards returned as weather reports proved a little off the mark, with Gavin Somers and Stephen Smith coming out on top with 45.

David Snowden and Nick Bohin had to settle for second place on countback, with Tristan Keight and John Davidson third on 44.

The top ladies pairing of Claire Redwood and Saybria Sims recorded a very creditable 42 points, with Mandy McEvoy presenting the trophy to the winners the following week, having missed the action due to Covid protocols.

Weston held their annual Seniors 125 Trophy, with countback needed to decide the result of the three-man team bowmaker.

Dave Bickell, Terry Waite and Dennis Longden won with 82 points ahead of Aussie Denison, Andy Skinner and Ron Kelley, with Terry Holden, Tim Latchem and Maurice Miller a point back in third.

Andy Balcombe, Steve Cocks and Ian Roberts took fourth on countback with 80, ahead of John Rowsell, Michael Latham and Martin Booth.

The seniors also played a friendly at Oake Manor, with Paul Chesney and vice-captain John Whitewood involved in a very tight opening match.

They took an early lead as Chesney chipped in for birdie, but were soon all square and finished with an honourable half point.

Dave Garrett and Paul Burns were never behind in their match and edged ahead late on for a 2&1 win, with Bickell and John Dixon never looking back after winning the second hole in a 4&3 victory.

Only four holes out of 18 were won in the next match, with two birdies from Matt Lazenby as he and Rob Filer shared the spoils with their rivals.

Ed Langford and Ian Roberts claimed another half, with the only Weston loss coming in the last match as Andy Chambers and Waite were beaten 5&4.

Lady Captain's Day produced a tight finish, as Angela Cook, Zena Balcombe and Joan Jenkinson won on countback with 83 points from Jan Bishop, Kaylee Davey and Sue Stilwel.

Melanie Rossi, Moira Parish and Teresa Blackhurst were third on 82 points, ahead of Virginia Rossi-Cummins, Geraldine White and Julia Wood on countback.

Claire Redwood, Saybria Sims and Marlyn Jackson were fifth on 80 points.
