Four members from the same family are on their way to Mexico for the Aerobic Gymnastics FIG World Championships.

BRITISH Gymnastics are sending a 25-strong squad to represent the country at the Aerobic Gymnastics FIG World Championships in Cancun, Mexico, and five gymnasts are from the same club.

Weston Aerobic Gymnastics is also sending two national coaches and a judge. Even more impressive when you consider that four of the delegation are from the same family. Dad Nigel is an international judge and coach, mum Debbie is a national coach and runs the club in Weston, as well as her own adult fitness classes.

Daughter Kat is an ex- national champion in two different disciplines, who now coaches and choreographs and son Matt, is the current British champion in his age group and a coach too.

They are joined on the trip by Rhys Williams and Kiera Landen, who are competing in their second world championships and are hoping to improve on their seventh place last time out.

They will both compete individually and as a pair in the 12-14 age group and will be joined by Katy Day to make a trio on Katy’s first trip to the worlds.

Williams will find himself competing against stable-mate Ben Payne in the individuals on Payne’s first trip to the worlds.

Matt Saunders will be competing in the junior individual category and also in the mixed pairs with his partner from Bulmershe Gymnastics Club, Sophie Julian, and both will be keen to add to their already impressive international medal tally.

National coach Kat Saunders said: “Here in Weston we have a special blend of talent. We tend to home grow our coaches and recognise that the best investment we can make is into the training of our coaching staff, who are all volunteers and work hard for the love of the sport.

“We bring in experts from outside disciplines for regular training workshops and never stop striving to be the best. Mix that with the support of everyone involved in the club, the gymnasts’ determination to succeed and their parent’s belief in them and us and we give the kids at our club the best chance of being everything they can be.”

The club is based at the Potteries Centre in Weston and children can start in the recreational classes where they can learn the foundations of gymnastics in a fun and friendly environment from the age of three.
