Weston men suffered a torrid afternoon against Somerset Gryphons, the home side hitting six goals.

Somerset Gryphons 6

Weston 0

Weston travelled to Somerset Gryphons and previous meetings between the two sides have always produced heated and close contests.

The game started well, but Weston found themselves under pressure from the start. The pressure was soaked up by the defence of Neate, Ninnis and Holland, but they found themselves defending numerous consecutive short corners, one of which beat Weston captain Jordan Canter. Weston had their chances with Neate and Huish but to no avail.

The Weston defence, after an exhausting first-half, found themselves under huge amounts of pressure and this told as Weston went into the break 3-0 down.

After tough words at the break, Weston came out and attacked from the off, good play by Dale, Beer and Sully freed Huish, whose reverse shot was off target.

Momentum was all in Somerset Gryphons favour and constant waves of attacks kept coming and it looked like the fourth goal was imminent, but another poor Weston mistake gifted the home team an easy goal.

Weston broke quickly and won a short corner, the drag flick was taken by Sam Neate which was saved by the keeper and the rebound feel to Kyle Sully, who would have scored if his team-mate had not got in the way and blocked the shot with his knee. Somerset Gryphons scored two more unanswered goals and this brought an end to a torrid afternoon for the visitors.

The Weston players must keep their heads held high with a gutsy performance with a depleted line-up. The Curry Garden man of the match was Dave Holland. DOD was given to Dave Beer.

Weston 2nd XI 1

Old Bristolians 9

Weston’s availability issues hit the men’s second team hard as a depleted squad came up against league leaders Old Bristolians.

An already bare squad was further impacted as Julian Mobsby was injured in the warm-up and had to be replaced by youngster Connor Mobsby.

Weston started positively and wingers Ollie and Stan Cunningham caused the Old Bristolians defence problems with their pace. However, the home team began to lose their shape and OB’s capitalised with a couple of goals on the break.

Weston showed their fighting spirit with a fine flowing move that saw Jack Pitt feed Roy Beer, who brought the score back to 2-1. Old Bristolians, who were promoted along with Weston last year, immediately scored themselves to make the score 3-1 at half-time.

As the second half progressed, Weston began to tire and went looking for goals to bring them back into the game, but the older heads of Old Bristolians held firm at the back.

Alex Thorne and Stuart Westcott were full of running, but as they began to tire they were found out of position and OB’s punished Weston with goal after goal. The final score of 9-1 did not reflect the end-to-end nature of the game.

The Curry Gardens man of the match went to Stan Cunningham, who showed the pace and flair that saw him awarded a scholarship to Millfield last season.
