ASK any Weston fan what he thinks of football this week, and he will probably reply ‘football, it’s a funny old game’.

After going down at Staines Town and then a 6-3 drubbing to struggling Boreham Wood, many a betting man would have confidently crossed Weston for a loss at home to Bromley in the pools on Saturday.

But the Seagulls, spearheaded by Sahr Kabba, bounced back in spectacular form, beating the league leaders 7-0 and raising several eye-brows across the Blue Square South in the process.

Manager Craig Laird told the Mercury the heavy win was a long-time coming for his side, who have often struggled to finish off sides due to poor finishing.

Delighted in his players’ performance, Craig urged the team to take their form to this Saturday’s game against Dartford and seal another three points on the road to safety.

He said: “It was fantastic to see all the players fulfil their potential and show everyone what a side they can be in this league.

“All the lessons harshly learnt from the Boreham Wood defeat were put into practice against Bromley, and I’m delighted we bounced back so well.

“We have been playing well and I always felt a win of such a scoreline was going to come soon, maybe not against the league leaders though.”

Craig, who received a pat on the back from chairman Paul Bliss after the game, said he was targeting four more wins to guarantee his side safety from relegation.

He added: “Once we get to the 40-point mark we can then concentrate on other things, but for now we’re looking to reach that target.

“We just need to iron out the inconsistency and play the way I know my team can.”

The game started with Weston in dominant form, scoring through Jamie Price after just two minutes from a corner which was not cleared properly.

Ten minutes later Sahr Kabba, who was tormenting Bromley’s giant central defenders Henriques and Jerrome Sobers, burst through into the penalty area and was brought down.

Nat Pepperell stepped up and converted his second penalty of the week.

Another ten minutes later, Kabba was at it again and was this time was taken down by Henriques, who was shown a red card.

Weston were awarded a free kick on 21 minutes on the edge of the penalty area and Martin Slocombe left goalkeeper Craig Holloway standing still for the third.

Weston kept up the pressure in the second half with Kabba hitting the angle of post and bar on 56 minutes.

They scored again on 78 minutes when Trowbridge made a penetrating run down the left, cut in on the by-line and laid off for Dayle Grubb, who had replaced Ingram on the hour. Grubb spotted Kirk coming in support and set him up to slam the ball past Holloway.

If Bromley were glad to see the back of Kabba on 79 minutes, they soon regretted it as Marcus Duharty came on and continued the mayhem.

Duharty was soon in the action, heading past Holloway from new loan signing from Plymouth Argyle, Ryan Leonard, who had replaced Pepperell on 85 minutes and five minutes later Duharty struck again, this time from Slocombe’s cross.

Gilbert completed the exercise in injury time, again from a Slocombe cross.

? ON Saturday, Weston entertain first-time visitors to the Woodspring Stadium, Dartford, and will be looking to overturn a 4-1 defeat in September with Marcus Duharty the scorer.
