Weston Jets got back to winning ways with a magical performance at Cardiff Merlins II on Sunday.

After an impressive start of five wins from their first six games, defeats against the always strong Bristol Bats and Cardiff Merlins I left them heading to Wales looking to get back on the winning trail.

Jets got off to a flying start on Sunday at Pontcanna Fields, scoring the maximum five runs in the first innings, with strong hitting leading to run-batted-ins for Nick Hodder, James Mortimer, James Carter and Dan Kirby-James.

This was backed up by some excellent pitching from Marshall Hanney, striking out three batters and only allowing one run in that time.

The Jets continued to score heavily in innings two with an RBI from Darren Hines and some errant pitching allowing five more runs.

Cardiff responded, however, with four runs of their own despite three more strike-outs by Hanney.

Runs were harder to come by in the third innings, but with the Jets two down without a run on the board Hines stepped up with a double to bring home Cos Bilciurescu and Hanney for two runs.

Hanney then continued his excellent pitching display with three more strike-outs for only one run, leaving Jets 12-6 up after three innings.

Further RBIs from Hines, Kirby-James and a massive triple to deep centre field from Carter scored a further five runs in the fourth innings and with the two-hour time limit approaching, the Jets were able to restrict Merlins to only four, leaving the final score as Weston 17 Cardiff 10.

The Jets carried on where they left off in game two with more impressive hitting, including two doubles from Mike Prince and Hodder and one from Hines.

There were further hits from Kirby-James, Fisher and a big two RBI hit from Aaron Moore. This added to some more excellent pitching, this time from James Carter striking out five batters in total, left Jets 18-0 ahead with only one Merlins inning left to bat.

Despite a spirited four runs in the final inning, the Jets ended up comfortable 18-4 winners. There were some excellent individual performances, but the Pinkers Craft Brewery MVP award was awarded to Hines for his perfect eight hits from eight at bats with nine RBIs.

Jets will hope to continue their winning ways against Bristol Brunels at Hutton Moor on Sunday June 26, first pitch is at midday.
