IT WAS a case of ‘keep calm, it’s Kabba time’, as Weston extended their winning start to 2012 to four games.

Diminutive striker Sahr Kabba scored another wonder goal on Saturday to set the Seagulls on their way to a 2-0 victory against Welling United, who had started the day in second place.

The result, which helped set a new record for the best winning run under boss Craig Laird, maintains the team’s play-off push with the manager urging players and fans to dream about promotion.

Welling started the day seven points above Weston, but the Seagulls started the better at the Woodspring Stadium and had a goal from Jamie Laird disallowed within the opening stages, while keeper Nick Pope’s goal was peppered with shots.

But it took only 15 minutes for the home team to take the lead, as Kabba was released down the right by Nat Pepperell. He beat defender Ben Martin, cut in along the by-line and beat Pope at his near post for his fifth goal in three games.

The result was as good as sealed after 36 minutes when Jamie Price was brought down in the box and Pepperell sent an unerring penalty past Pope.

The game tailed off in the second half, but Welling came back with Lloyd Irish being tested on several occasions.

It was Weston who almost nicked a third at the death, but Pepperell fired wide of goal after beating two defenders.

Nonetheless, the Seagulls now lie just one point behind Sutton United in the last coveted play-off spot, although the Surrey team have played one game less than Weston.

With only Dayle Grubb missing from the squad with a broken finger, Craig is urging supporters and players to take the club’s play-off dream seriously and hopes the team will be within the top-five over the next month.

He said: “We are about a year ahead of schedule in of the team’s progress, while in terms of our league position we’re about a month ahead.

“We need to keep up this run of victories, especially against teams at the bottom of the table, and we have been very fortunate with injuries as we had our dip in terms of available players in December.

“Welling, despite the fact they started the day in second, showed us a lot of respect by playing a 4-5-1 formation. We are putting ourselves under pressure at the moment, but it’s a good pressure as we are at the right end of the table and want to continue playing well.”

The club’s play-off quest continues on Saturday as they face 13th-placed Boreham Wood. The Seagulls will hope to complete another league double, having beaten the Hertfordshire-based side 4-1 at home in August.

Former goalkeeper Ryan Northmore, who currently runs the academy side, has been appointed a club director, while the senior side will face League Two side Plymouth Argyle in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Monday.

Talks are ongoing to decide whether fans will be able to watch the match, which starts at 7pm.
