It has been a successful start to the season for Weston Netball Club, which saw two of its three teams take home all-important wins in the first week of competition.

Weston 2s started off its campaign in division one against The Downs at Gordano School, in Portishead. The opposition had ranked middle of the table last season so it was a difficult game for the girls who had just scored promotion at the end of last season.

Quarter one was close with both teams getting turnovers but struggling at times to maintain possession and convert to goal. The score at the timer was 7-5 to Weston.

Feedback from coach Justine Welch at quarter time was all listened to and actioned, with Kathryn Stevens and Ellie Hall finding some lovely passing play in the attacking circle and sinking some great goals in the second quarter.

The defence of Ellie Young, Kirsty Barrett and Sophie Avery also turned it on in Q2, seeing the opposition score only two goals and at half time Weston were leading 17-7.

The fresh legs of Belmina Nji as GD and Barrett moving to centre, plus improved link play by centre court players, saw Weston further their lead to 26-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Lack of match fitness came into play in the fourth quarter but Weston fought on to increase their lead, finally winning 36-19.

Over at Sidcot School it was a slightly different story for the Weston 3s who saw a close fought match again Yatton.

The first five minutes of the game saw Yatton go 6-0 up but great centre court play and many interceptions from Katie Bailiss, helped Weston to pull the score back to 9-all at the end of the first quarter.

In Q2 the play was very equal but Yatton managed to pull away again leaving the score at half time to 17-15.

Many changes were made at the start of the second half and Weston brought on a fresh pair of legs which worked in their favour to even the score out at the end of Q3 to 22-22.

The last quarter of the game was where Weston started to catch Yatton out as they had no subs and were beginning to tire.

The amazing defence by Georgina Carpenter and Denise Garfield showed turnover after turnover. The end result of the game was a good 29-26 first win to Weston 3s; players’ player went to shooter Ashton Hixson.
