Weston AFC over-50’s maintained their perfect record in the Gloucester League following their latest round of games recently.

The over-50’s started at Abbeymead Rovers and began the game slowly.

Weston eventually started to dictate the game through the midfield of Kev Attwood, Mark Hooper and Ed Lilley.

A pass from Attwood saw Steve Crilley turn his defender and rifled his shot into the top corner.

A long pass from Dave Castle found Attwood on the edge of the box and he cleverly made space to tuck the ball home.

Weston pushed forward again and Crilley scored his second, with the game ending 3-0 win to Weston.

Next game again was also away, this time at Chepstow.

Weston played some lovely football with Crilley slotting the ball into the Chepstow goal past the diving keeper.

Lilley then broke up a Chepstow attack and dribbled his way forwards to goal and unleashed a fierce shot that riffled into the top corner.

With just a few minutes to go Chris Underhill turned the defence and smashed his shot into the Chepstow goal to make it 3-0.

Crilley then finished off the game in style with a superb solo goal as Weston won 4-0.

Weston’s next game was against Clevedon in the local derby with both teams looking for the win.

The Seagulls took an early lead when a clever set play between Lilley and Attwood was smashed into the roof of the net by Crilley.

Weston battled hard against a determined Clevedon side who were trying to counter attack with Clevedon forward Buzz Moore providing a constant threat.

Castle made some important tackles and John Hembrow made some excellent saves to keep Weston ahead.

Another good passing move between Underhill, Attwood, Lilley and Crilley was finished with Crilley slotting the ball home past Nigel Clarke who was outstanding after making some fantastic saves. But it was Weston who ended up 2-0 winners.

Weston remain top of the Gloucester League having played 16 and won all 16 total of 48 points

Assistant manager Arie Van Vliet said: “I am chuffed, we have started the new year exactly as we wanted to, we were good all over the pitch, defensively solid.

“The midfield worked tirelessly especially Lilley, Attwood and Underhill. Crilley was outstanding, John made some good saves, Lilley, Underhill, Attwood, Castle and Crilley dominated.

“We have Lach returning from injury and his presence on the bench raised the spirit we miss him on the pitch and I’m pleased to say he will be back soon, but at present the lads did really well, we now have to focus on the next games.”
