Weston Reds over-50s started their last round of matches in this season's Somerset FA league at Keynsham.

In the first game against the hosts, it was Keynsham who scored in the first minute and it proved the only goal of the game.

The Reds had a new defensive pairing at the back with Rich Rzeznicki and Dave Waterhouse.

Both did really well to stop the league's second best attacking force from adding to the early goal.

The second game was against Weston Whites and some players were rotated as the Reds lost some fluidity and conceded three without reply.

The third match was against Frome and the Reds began to make good progress with George Davis probing well from midfield, aided by Brian Moment who looked lively.

But it is was Frome who ran out 2-0 winners after the Reds didn't take their chances.

The fourth game was against Peasdown and Ian Granger had a couple of good efforts saved by the keeper before Peasdown scored from one of only two chances to win a very tight game.

The season's final game was against Shepton and the Reds came out of the blocks quickly and made good progress with the Shepton goalkeeper making two good saves.

Reds then had to sustain some pressure, but the ball broke to Dave Kirk who was in on goal and the Reds striker fired home a fine shot to give them the lead.

Shepton were determined to get back in the game but Reds were set on not to concede, with John Hammond in outstanding form in goal to help the cause.

Once again the ball was played upfield to Kirk who held off his marker to score another excellent goal and help Reds end the day as worthy winners.

Joint player-manager John Budd was again proud of his players and said "It is a good way to finish the season on a high.

“All my players gave me 110 per cent. I had to bring in some new lads following some injuries in the last couple of days but they did really well.

“We were always in the games but couldn't take our chances."

Fellow joint player-manager Dave Shilton added: "John and I have learnt a lot this season not only about our players but also about ourselves.

“Due to Covid we, like everyone else, had a stop-start season but it's really difficult when you are new into the job.

“We both would like to thank Lach (Geddes), Arie (Van Vilet) and Keith (Seabourne) for their continued help and support and are already putting next season's plans together and cannot wait to get started."
