Weston Golf Club’s Avalon B team have got off to a great start to the league season.

WESTON Golf Club’s Avalon B team entertained Frome B on a cold and blustery day.

Opening pair Steve Blackaller and Dan Hewlett secured a 4&3 win and father and son Dave and Jack Radcliffe going down 2&1. Captain Steve Corrick and Gary Homer maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 2&1 win over Frome’s lowest handicappers.

John Whitewood and Andy Smith won their match again 2&1. Finally, Bob Hurrell and Alan Harris had a tough match against Frome’s captain and went down 2&1. With three games played, the team is in a strong position to challenge for promotion.

The Avalon B team travelled to Stockwood Vale for their second fixture of the season.

THE White Hart at Cheddar hosted its first charity golf day in aid of Weston Hospicecare.

The event was held at Wedmore Golf Club, with 36 golfers split between two teams. There were nine holes played in the morning and a 18 in the afternoon after a well-deserved bacon roll.

The golf was followed by a two-course meal at the White Hart and concluded with an awards ceremony and raffle. The day was organised by Mathew Berry and Keith Irwin and raised 1,596.

Longest putt: Matt Berry; closest to the pin: John Thompson; the two teams drew and the best dress and worst trousers prize was won by Graeme Thomas.

Thanks go to all who supported the event and landlady Tracy Chidzey for her support.

A DIFFICULT week weather-wise started on a wet and windy Monday morning for the Isle of Wedmore seniors’ medal.

Best score was a 71 in Division 3 for Eric Wallace who finished one shot ahead of Clive Williams with Bernard Abbott a shot back in third. Division 1 went to John Viney with a steady 72, which put him ahead of Graham Clifford (73) and Colin Boorman (74).

There was a similarly close finish in Division 2 where Terry Stew kept up his run of good form, his 72 just getting him home ahead of John Hogan and Brian Kidd, both scoring 73.

The following day, the seniors were in action again, taking on Frome in the first round of the seniors’ Somerset Bowl at Farrington.

Ray Dodkin and John Viney saw Wedmore off to a good start, winning 5&4. Colin Boorman and Ian Robson took the second match by the same score, with Tony Biggs and Steve Lawrence sealing the match on the 16th green.

Keith Thomas and Tony Glover won on the 17th, but Tim Harris and John Sanderson found nine shots just too many to give in the final game, to leave Wedmore 4-1 winners.

Despite a miserable forecast, the ladies played their better-ball competition in the dry. Rachel Lockley and Sue Hughes took full advantage, racking up 38 points. This put them four points ahead of runners-up, Gina Falcon and Claire Biggs with Cathy Olive and Angela Webber third on 33.

PETAL – The Christine Woodberry Memorial Trust is the chosen charity for the year for Brean Golf Club.

This local charity which provides assistance direct to the families of cancer sufferers was selected by Stewart Garrett and his lady counterpart Gail Mason and they gave the fund a hefty boost with a successful staging of the annual charity day last week.

The winning quartet were the team sponsored by Burnham Portable Toilets consisting of Steve and Jackie Richards, Andy Towens and Martin Preddy, who racked up an impressive 84 points, including 47 on the back nine.

This gave them a one point winning margin over 2011 winners the Jones Boys. Brothers Paul and Steve were joined by father David and uncle Eric as they almost repeated the win of 12 months earlier.

Third place went to the Brean seniors+1 team as Roger Blackwell, Mike Allen and Barrie Yearsley were joined by club professional Andrew March on their way to 81 points.

Petal’s Flowers, a team from the benefitting charity made up of Richard Tye, Paul Plume, Mark Coombs and Brian Warner, ended in fourth spot on 80. Following an excellent meal and prize giving plus a successful auction in the Tavern, it was announced that the estimated figure raised solely on the day was around the 2,000 mark.

Elsewhere at Brean, the Avalon League Division 2 side racked up another big home win as Taunton Vale were the latest team to suffer defeat at the hands of the Brean team.

The visitors avoided the whitewash, but still ended on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline, a result which sends Brean clear at top of the table after barely a month of the season.

Team captain Steve Bateman’s decision to play so many matches early in the campaign seems to be paying dividends.

The seniors’ matched the achievements of the main club as they moved comfortably into the next round of the Somerset Bowl as their Minehead counterparts were dispatched by a 4-1 scoreline.

The wet weather and a subsequent buggy ban at Woodspring left the seniors’ short-handed and not surprisingly they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of their hosts.

Brean’s professional’s also suffered with the weather as their planned trip to the Forest of Dean for the Forest Hills Pro-Am was called off.

They return to G&S PGA medal action with the last event of the season taking place at Isle of Wedmore. Andrew March will be looking to get himself within striking distance of the title, going into the final event the Total Triumph sponsored 36 hole championship at Clevedon.
