Weston Rugby Club went down to a heavy defeat at home to Redingensians.

WESTON 23 pts

REDINGENSIANS 52 pts

REDINGENSIANS ran in eight tries at the Recreation Ground last Saturday to condemn the Seasiders to a heavy defeat.

The home defence, which had faltered at Chippenham during the first 10 minutes, produced an encore when they found themselves 14 points down after only seven minutes.

The visitors’ full-back Jevon Marsh touched down first and centre Aaron Hopkins was next, both scores converted by fly-half Shaun Brown.

James Mackay’s penalty gave Weston some respite but tries by Marsh and Andrew Amor and a conversion by Brown took the interval score to 3-26.

Early in the second half George Sparks’ chip ahead saw George Wright halted on the line but Mackay’s second penalty was their reward.

However, in the 56th minute Marsh completed his hat-trick when he easily evaded three would-be tacklers.

Brown converted again but after the hosts had gone close with a line-out drive when Craig Withers was held up, replacement prop Matthew Truscott was the scorer, his first for the club.

Mackay converted and the fly-half was soon gathering his chip and chase to allow George Kimmins to give Paul Sprague the scoring pass. The score was now 18-33 but the visitors soon scotched any ideas of a Weston comeback.

Marsh scored his fourth try, closely followed by Dominic Gosling, and after Jamie Rudkin’s consolation score, Brown finished things off with his try and his sixth conversion.

Weston: C Young, P Sprague, G Wright, G Kimmins, M Watkins, J Mackay, R Bennett (J Reid 75), D Swann, C Withers, S Donegan (M Truscott 48), A Russell (A Glen 46), S Board, S Eaton, J Rudkin, G Sparks (c) (A Glen 3-11 blood).

The Seasiders visit Bridgwater on Saturday and they really must shore up their defences. Far too many soft tries are being donated and this needs to be corrected against a team which is struggling at the foot of the table.

WESTON fly-half James Mackay reached a personal milestone when he made his 65th first team appearance in the match against Redingensians last week to qualify for his club blazer badge.

Mackay (22) was educated at Churchill School and his junior rugby was played at Winscombe RFC before joining the Seasiders’ colts squad.

He was still a colt when he made his senior debut at home to Clifton in October 2008 and, so far, he has scored 576 points.

His badge was presented to him by club secretary Tony Russell after last Saturday’s match.
