WESTON seniors took part in the inaugural inter-county veterans’ competition at Saunton Golf Club recently.

Eight seniors, led by captain Rick Fowler, were part of a six-club team representing Somerset against teams from Devon and Cornwall.

The individual club competition was won by Launceston Golf Club from Cornwall, but the county title was won by the Somerset team, which also included representatives from Bath, Enmore Park, Saltford, Taunton and Pickeridge and The Mendip.

In all, 144 golfers took part on East and West Courses at Saunton and Somerset were invited to defend the title next year.

? WITH the clocks going back and the move to some winter tees, it’s clear that the main season at Wedmore Golf Club is winding down.

The seniors held their monthly Stableford and in beautiful autumn weather there was some excellent scoring. For once the best scores came in Division 1 where club vice-captain elect Ian Robson scored 41 points only to come fourth.

Immediately ahead of him was seniors’ vice-captain elect Peter Laney, with 42 points, losing runners-up place on countback to Colin Boorman. Well clear in first place though, was Stephen Lawrence with a handicap reducing 45 points.

Scores were good, but not quite so spectacular in Division 2. Third place went to Jim Sims with 37 points with Barrie Gardiner taking second place with yet another 40 points, leaving Bill Wallace the clear winner with an excellent 42 points.

The ladies also held a Stableford but by Thursday the weather turned to damp, grey and blustery and the scores suffered accordingly.

Only one player on the day matched par for the course. This was Trish Phelps who won the Bronze Division with 36 points. This was one point ahead of both Janis Lawrence and Sarah Mathews, with Lawrence taking second place on countback.

The lower handicap Silver Division players struggled. Eunice Bond, won with 35 points, followed by Sue Chambers on 33 and Sue Tarry with 32.

By Saturday the weather showed both extremes, moving from bright and sunny to wet and miserable during the annual match between the captain and vice-captain’s teams. Club captain Andrew Midgley was unable to play this year, which casts some doubt on the equity of vice-captain Bob Jones’ team selections as his side romped away to a 8.5 to 1.5 victory to claim the Barron-Midgley Trophy.

? STEVE Mason produced some fireworks in the November monthly Stableford when he carded 42 points.

This unusually gave him victory in Division 2, which Mason has recently returned to as his handicap has risen, over Wally Pape who carded 40 points. Next month he will be up against Jared Poole who recorded his first victory since joining Brean with 38 points ahead of Roger Vaughan on 37 in Division 1.

Roger Broome also entered the winner’s enclosure for the first time after his success in Division 3 with 37 points. Runner-up was Stewart Garrett with 36.

On Saturday evening, Brean hosted a night golf event. After the success of last year’s competition it was repeated as the teams played over nine lit holes in a Texas scramble format.

The winners were the quartet of Brian Read, Les Clutterbuck, Wayne Barrett and captain-elect Dave Bradley with a nett score of 29.1. Taking his second runners-up spot of the day was Stewart Garrett alongside Nigel Ellis, Steve and Tina Bateman as they finished just 0.3 of a point behind.

Three seniors finished well clear of the main field in the November Stableford last week. Roger Phillips was victorious after handing in a card showing a 41 point haul. Runner-up, just as he was to be two days later in the main club Stableford, was Wally Pape on 37 as he pipped captain Dai Wood on countback over the back nine holes.

? WORLEBURY seniors ladies dinner dance took place at the golf club recently.

Over 80 people attended this black tie event which was a great success. Entertainment for the evening was by Paul Sylvester - Soul Sounds.
