Weston senior water polo team defeated Swindon for the first time in many years.
Weston senior water polo team travelled to Swindon in Division One, and came away with their first win over them in many years, and continues the Seasider’s unbeaten run to three games.
Swindon got off to a cracking start finding the back of the net twice in the opening minutes Chris Selby, beating Weston’s Dutch keeper Danny Jacobs, but Liam Coles pulled one back for the Seasiders and Alec Gahame equalised soon after.
Weston extended this lead further with goals by the captain for the game Reece Trapani. Scott Bradley and former Frome player Martyn Hodges extended the lead to 2-5 by the end of the quarter.
Swindon fought back in the second quarter with a goal by Matt James, but Trapani kept the lead for Weston by scoring a second, Ian Brewer pulled Swindon back to 4-6, but Hodges scored for the visitors to make it 4-7.
However, Dave Quinlivan scored with a fine lob over Jacobs shortly before the end of the period to pull it back to 5-7.
After the half-time break and some stern words to the home side players, they came out fighting and Michal Trzeciak pulled it back to 6-7. Hodges restored the two-goal cushion with a powerful shot that left Swindon keeper Andy Hicks no chance.
Trzeciak found the back of the net a few minutes later, only to see Hodges strike again, followed by a third goal for Trapani, taking the Seasiders three goals up at 7-10.
Trzeciak scored his third goal of the period to make it 8-10, but Swindon were unable to contain Hodges and stop him scoring and keeping Weston in front at 8-11.
Swindon fought back hard in the closing minutes of the period with goals by James, Tom Hannay and Selby to equalise at 11-all, only to see 16-year-old Vaughan Clarke score a fine solo goal, restoring Weston’s lead at 11-12.
Both teams fought hard in the final quarter with both only managing to score one goal apiece. Trapani re-established the Seasider’s two-goal cushion and Trzeciak gave some hope to Swindon by scoring with just over two minutes to go, but Weston ran the clock down and secure a historic victory.
