Racing driver Will Burns registered his best weekend of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup season with a brace of podiums at Knockhill in Scotland.

ACADEMY Motorsport’s Will Burns scored his best weekend of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup season with a brace of podiums at Knockhill in Scotland.

The Weston driver had never competed at Knockhill before, but his string of podium finishes in recent rounds altered his strategy to attack the title challenging frontrunners from the first of the weekend races.

Qualifying only six-hundreds of a second off pole position, Burns started from sixth on the grid for the short sprint-format race one.

As rain began to fall, Will took advantage to move into a podium position. When a safety car was required a lap later, racing was suspended until the grid was left to race a single-lap dash to the flag.

All but one of the cars were still on slick tyres, and with the rain intensifying, it became a matter of survival rather than competition. Will did just that to hold on to third place.

In race two, Burns lost his third position early in the race, but applied sufficient pressure to his rival to cause a spin. He once again claimed third place and a third successive podium finish.

The Pershore-based Academy prepared the G55 machine for its final outing of the weekend, the reversed grid race three. Courtesy of his earlier third place finish, Will started fourth on the grid.

Having lost out at the start, Will looked to find a way past championship leader Robertson but the nature of the Knockhill circuit makes it tough to pass. However, a time penalty for second on the road Andrew Watson moved Burns up to a fourth place finish.

Will said: “It’s been a great weekend. I was only 0.06s off pole position and I knew that I had the pace to be closer to the front from the off in race one.

“It was my first visit to Knockhill and due to the nature of the track, I wanted to stay out of trouble and consolidate, but it turned out to be the most successful weekend of the season.

The next rounds of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup will take place at Rockingham on September 6-7.
