Kewstoke Lions off to a winning start in Division 2 of the Weston and District League.

Kewstoke Lions 6

Locking Park 1

KEWSTOKE were keen to get off to a winning start following last season’s relegation from Division 1.

They were trailing 1-0 until 35 minutes, when an Adam Brueford penalty and a Joe Popperwell header turned the game, giving them the advantage at the break.

The second half was a better performance by Kewstoke. Ryan Fieldhouse scored two goals and later turned provider for Ben Popperwell. The scoring was completed when a Popperwell effort was deflected into the net.

Sam Davies provided several further scoring opportunities and despite the scoreline, DS Securities man of the match went to keeper Alex Blake. Thanks go to DS Securities for sponsoring the new team kit.

Draycott 4

Weston St Johns Res 8

SAINTS went in to this Division 1 game full of confidence after last week’s 7-1 hammering of Hutton.

Saints started strongly and Hayes, Rob Winter and Dan Hartley all went close. It was no surprise when Saint took the lead through Winter. He doubled his tally soon after and there were further goals for Andy Young and Troy Hayes.

After the break, Draycott pulled a goal back before Winter completed his hat-trick before being replaced by Ryan Charalambous.

Dan Hartley added a fine solo goal before Draycott scored three to set up an interesting finish, but Charalambous had the last say with two well taken goals.

Mike Whittiker’s Building Contractors man of the man was Rob Winter.

Worle Rangers 5

Portishead Town Colts 4

RANGERS made hard work of their opening Division 5 fixture of the season, but came away with three points after defeating a spirited Portishead side.

Worle’s creativity and composure were too much for Town throughout the first half as they led 4-2 with two goals each from Troy Hannam and Nick Carter. Both were set up by good play from Jo Dale, Marc Trewern and Adam Brown.

After the break, it soon became 5-2 when Brown finished well after good work from Jamie Ingersent. Portishead hit back after keeper Nathan Royce was caught napping and soon after an own goal made it 5-4.

Worle’s defensive game started to come to the fore with Mickey Ayers, Matt Wilson, Barry White and Trewern standing firm, and Royce atoning for his earlier error. The introduction of Chris Brinson freshened up the front line and Dave Ayers helped stiffen up the defence as Worle closed out the game.

Troy Hannam was the Curry Garden man of the match.

Shipham AFC Res 2

Burnham Utd B 2

SHIPHAM started this Division 6 match in the ascendancy and took the lead after 10 minutes when Lee Stacey set up Jamie Hutchinson to score.

Burnham equalised on the half hour when Shipham failed to clear the ball to make it 1-1, which is how it stayed until half time.

Burnham took the lead midway through the second half and with just five minutes to go, a Jon Winter through ball sent Hutchinson through to equalise. Shipham should have won the match in the last seconds but a Matty Stewart goal was ruled offside.

The Shipham AFC man of the match went to Jamie Hutchinson, with notable mentions for Ben Drake, Chris Mullins and Lee Stacey.
