West Wilts A 1

Weston started their season with an excellent home victory against West Wilts.

New captain Jordan Canter headed into this game wanting a good attacking display and this showed from the off with Sam Neate feeding the ball well to Adam Childs and Rich Heal.

The front three wreaked havoc with the West Wilts defence and it was during one of these moves that space was opened up allowing the returning Joey Dale to score.

West Wilts continued to fight and cut the Weston defence open and allowed a one-on-one, which Canter saved well with his stick. It was during this attack that a penalty corner was given and West Wilts were able to equalise.

The visitors continued to press, but the defence of P Ninnis, D Beer, CJ Neate and AP Etchells stood firm. It was their calm and patient passing at the back that allowed the midfield to break and good work by Kyle Sully, C Bryant and Dale, set up Childs to score his first of the match.

Weston were flowing in attack and quickly scored again with Gareth Hawkes scoring a reverse stick and just before half-time, Childs netted a second with excellent link- up play from the whole team.

The second half was a hard-fought affair with the West Wilts defence and in particular their goalkeeper, making a string of saves to stop Weston adding to their tally.

Weston is proud to be sponsored by the Curry Garden. Man of the match sponsored by the Summerhouse went to Joey Dale. DOD went to Rich Heal.

Mendip A 5

Weston A 3

Weston’s first game in West Central 2 after promotion last year did not go as planned and they slipped to a 5-3 defeat.

Weston started strongly and could have ahead in the first few minutes with Neil Cunningham netting from an Alex Thorne cross, but was disallowed for a stick obstruction.

Mendip opened the scoring from a penalty corner, before Weston equalised from their own penalty corner minutes later. Slater injected the ball at pace, Stuart Westcott stopped perfectly and Roy Beer dispatched the shot at speed.

The second half started with Mendip on the front foot and two quick goals put them ahead. Mount and James Leeks defended well at the back, but they could not stop the constant Mendip threat.

Beer grabbed his second to temporarily bring Weston back into the game from another penalty corner, but another counter attack from Mendip and a penalty flick saw them gain an unassailable lead.

Mobsby finished from close range to grab a late consolation goal for Weston, but the score finished 5-3 to Mendip.

The Curry Garden man of the match was Alex Thorne.

Weston Under-12s took part in the Avon Junior League festival and did themselves and their club proud.

A few competitive debuts and players playing up an age group meant Weston were already facing a battle, but they never gave up throughout the day.

First they played Redland and played well throughout the game, but the Redland striker made the difference in the end netting a hat-trick.

Weston took on Clevedon who found Archie in inspired form between the Weston sticks, kicking well and earning the Castelan player of the day alongside it as well as Weston’s first point of the season in a 0-0 draw.

The Seasiders faced local rivals Old Bristolians and were unlucky to lose 1-0 to a goal in the dying minutes of the game. They faced Westbury in the final game of the day, Weston battled hard and were under pressure for large parts of the game.

Westbury scored twice early, which kicked Weston into life as they repeatedly threatened the Westbury goal. Weston got their reward and their first goal of the day, after learning penalty corners at training.

A great injection from Joe and a good first touch from Jack, allowed him to strike the ball hard past the Westbury keeper into the bottom corner.

Weston squad: Archie, Kieran, Joe, Tom, Jamie, Ella, Olivia M, Olivia F, Jack, Elliot, Fletcher, Liam, Ethan, Martha and Finlay.
