Winscombe’s batting imploded during their run chase against Staplegrove.

ANOTHER wet weekend saw Staplegrove welcome Winscombe, who won the toss and without hesitation elected to bowl first.

The initial couple of overs were poor from Winscombe, leaking early runs. However, some excellent swing bowling from young left-armer Sim Lyons saw two wickets fall in the same over.

Lyons’ effort was matched by some quick and accurate bowling from Jory Curteton, and the pair ended with figures of 2-23 and 1-31 respectively. The introduction of Jordan Peters and off-spinner Jack Fraser allowed little for the Staplegrove batsmen to work with, and things looked good for Winscombe at drinks.

Peters was taken off to allow overseas player Zain Patel to come into the attack and the spinners bowled in miserly tandem, Patel finishing with 2-17 in 10 overs and Jack Fraser with 1-19 in his.

Although the tail wagged slightly for the home team with Brendan Craggs making 26, they were soon bowled out for 136.

Winscombe’s reply started brightly, with openers John Reeves and James Durrans-Paul making good inroads to the total. Reeves was then adjudged lbw to the left-arm swing of Sam Wadham, as was Fraser two balls later.

This was a cue for Winscombe’s all too familiar implosion. Durrans-Paul was run out for 21, Patel added an eccentric and chance-strewn 23 and the rest of Winscombe’s line up failed miserably to fire, blown away for 78.
