Winscombe bounced back after last week’s defeat, to record victory at Butleigh.

WINSCOMBE showed character after last week’s defeat to record an excellent win at Butleigh.

Opening bowlers Jordan Peters and Cureton took two early wickets, but were replaced after just seven overs by spinners Jack Fraser and Zain Patel. Fraser, aged 16, and his more experienced partner bowled well, pegging the hosts back with 20 miserly overs conceding just 42 runs.

The end of their spells saw the return of Peters and the introduction of young Simeon Lyons. The latter took time to settle, conceding 20 in his first over, but bowled superbly after he found rhythm, finishing with 1-36. Peters picked up two further wickets, ending with 4-57. Cureton returned at the other end and took three quick wickets as Butleigh finished on 212-9.

Winscombe’s reply started positively before Cureton was adjudged lbw. This brought Jack Fraser to the crease to join Rob Bradley. The pair may have a combined age of 31 – fewer years than skipper Iain Fraser has been playing first team cricket - but both batted with maturity.

Bradley (20) popped a catch back to the bowler, bringing Zain Patel to the wicket. He smashed his first ball for four, rapidly followed by a flurry of sixes and fours that took him to a 22-ball 50.

Fraser completed his second 50 in three league outings before falling for 62, soon followed by Patel. Jon Reeves with partnership with James Durans-Paul ticked the runs off in comfortable fashion. A slight hiccup with the scores tied saw Durans-Paul caught for 29, but it was not enough to deny Winscombe an excellent victory with 10 overs to spare.
