Winscombe remain unbeaten in the Weston & District Over-60s League and the Somerset County League.

WINSCOMBE are still unbeaten in the Weston & District Over-60s League and their A team are still unbeaten in the Somerset County Division 1 North.

They had a mixed bag of results this week starting with a loss in the friendly match against Bridgwater away by seven shots which was followed by a win in the Weston Over-60s League against Burnham at home by 22 shots.

The home game against Nailsea in the Clevedon & District Co-operative Funeralcare League was lost by seven shots, despite sharing two winning rinks apiece.

In the Somerset League, Winscombe A won on all three rinks away to St Andrews B scoring maximum points, while the B team lost away to Portishead.

CLARENCE cruised into the second round of the National Club Two Fours competition when they won by 33 shots away to Willmott Park.

Team captain David Stott’s four raced away to a 15-0 lead, including a fifth-end six, and, despite a fightback by the home rink, added a seven on end 18. Stott and co were 18 shots ahead when Willmott Park conceded with an end to go.

On the other rink, Richard Crawford’s men also had a six, but had been pegged back to a two-shot lead by the 13th end. However, they added 13 unanswered shots and their game was abandoned with three ends still to play.

Clarence B made it three wins out of three in the Somerset County League with a 15-shot victory away to Clevedon Promenade C.

A seven on the 19th end enabled the rink skipped by John Edwards to overcome a three-shot deficit and win by six. Mike Davies and his rink picked up eight shots over the last four ends to finish 10 clear, while Mike Skyrme led 16-13 until dropping four shots on the last two ends.

Clarence Blues made their exit from the Over-60s KO Cup when, despite sharing the rinks, they lost by 13 shots away to Portishead RBL.

Paul Tubb, Mick Edlin and Richard Crawford skipped their triples teams to victory by a total of 14 shots, but it was not enough to make up for a deficit of 17 on captain David Stott’s rink and defeats on two others.

The Golds, Clarence’s second team in the Over-60s League, travelled one rink short to play Saxons, Victoria’s first string, in the League KO Cup and duly suffered a heavy defeat.

However, John Atkins and Ron Higgins came close to victory, with Atkins’s triple, 7-15 down with five ends left, losing by one, the same margin by which Higgins was defeated.

OVER the last week, both Banwell league teams followed on from wins in their previous encounters with victories at home.

Banwell A played host to Knowle and all three rinks took early leads, but by the halfway mark, Banwell found themselves only five shots ahead. Darrell Johnston and his rink maintained their lead to win by six, while Mike Davies and his team pulled back a five-shot deficit with five ends to play to win by two.

Fine performances from Tony Hyde, John Rickerty, Harry Woodards and Jimmy Laurent led the way as they finished 15 shots up, unfortunately on one of the rinks three shots were dropped on the last end to deny victory on all three rinks.

ANOTHER busy week of league bowls commenced with Wedmore Ladies playing away to Victoria in the Weston and District League.

Gill Harvey’s rink scored the only win in an overall defeat for Wedmore by 35 shots to 55.

Despite dropping seven shots on each of the second and fifth ends and trailing the visitors right through to the 14th, Roger Hughes’ rink staged a spirited comeback to finally win 31-24.

The club’s mixed triples day proved to be a great success. Despite the cold blustery conditions, 14 teams battled it out throughout the day with the honours finally going to Ron Barron’s trio of John Clark and Jenny Collingwood in a close-run final against Liz Hamblin, Clive Wheller and Ann Hughes.

WESSEX Ladies celebrated their 50th anniversary by inviting local clubs to join them by fielding a rink of four players.

Also attending were life members and past playing members, including one guest who travelled from Kent.

President Joan Duffy and captain Elaine Stott raised the flag to commence proceedings. A match was played versus the visitors with the visitors winning on all rinks.

The celebrations continued into the evening when the cake was cut, and a barbecue was held. Target bowls and skittles were played and a musical evening including a quiz was enjoyed.

Against Burnham in the Weston & District Ladies’ League, they were two ahead after 10 ends overall, but only Mary Davison, club captain Jo Mannion and Val Collicott earned any points, winning by two.

A heavy defeat on one of the three rinks proved costly for Clarence in the North Somerset Triples League home game against Portishead.

At 10 ends, two of their rinks were ahead, but the visitors pulled away in the latter stages to finish up on all but one of the triples. The exceptions were Pam Fowler, Pauline Dunn and Pauline Burrough, who scored three on the last end to win by that margin.
