Woodland Lawn Tennis Club finished off the summer season in style with their annual finals day on Saturday.

Six matches took place over the course of the afternoon with the men’s Chairman’s Cup up first.

Jimmy Hay took on Russ Deuvall which was closely fought and dominated by baseline rallies although. Hay took opportunities to charge the net until Deuvall’s lobs to the backhand side proved too successful but it was Hay who won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The ladies’ doubles featured Lucy Johannsen and Claire Norvill against Tracey Hooper and Cheryl Batt.

After a tentative start, the women settled into a tactical battle which saw the whole myriad of shots being used.

Norvill's reliability on the baseline coupled with Johannsen's adventurous net play gave them the win.

Next on court were Katie Ashman and Tracey Hooper for the ladies' Chairman Cup and the two displayed amazing agility, covering the court well.

Ashman's experience made the difference and she won the match 6-2, 6-1.

Nick Griffiths and Chris Bond pitted against Mike Fletcher and Nick Evans. It was the only match of the afternoon to go to three sets as the momentum shifted between the pairs before Griffiths and Bond took the title.

The Men's President Cup singles was next and each spectator was treated to a display of power and control from Oliver Fuller and Tom Deverson.

Fuller's baseline prowess was matched by Deverson's control and superb net play to provide a match full of tension and drama.

But it was Deverson who managed to wrestle control in the end to take the title.

The mixed doubles had some familiar faces back on court as Bond and Ashman took on Evans and Johannsen.

Again, all of the shots were on show with baseline rallies being intermingled with some stunning net play before Ashman and Bond managed to get ahead and maintain their concentration to win in straight sets.

Club Secretary, Annie Buckingham, was delighted with how the event played out and said: “It’s lovely seeing so many supporters here, cheering on the players.

"We’ve seen some great tennis and everyone has had an enjoyable time. There’s no better way to round off the summer.”
