To mark the 70th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II a group of ladies from Worlebury held a fund-raising competition to purchase a tree to mark the Platinum Jubilee this year.

And after recent storm damage to the trees at the club, the planting will be a very welcome addition.

In the first round of this year’s Somerset Bowl proud captain James Marshall led the team to a close fought 3-2 victory over Wells.

First out were Alix Kew and Mark Otterburn, who received four shots from their opponents and won their match by 2&1.

In the second match Ken Hanson and junior Troy Young had to give five shots to their opponents and lost a close fought match by the same margin.

Simon Dempsey and Dan Bovingdon also had to give five shots to their opponents but won comfortably 4&3, but club champion Josh Freeman and James Marshall lost a close fought game 2&1 after giving seven shots to their opponents.

It was all square after four matches and the final pairing of Gareth Hawkes and Ross Macnab were also all square after 18 holes.

As all games have to be played to a conclusion, they battled on to play extra holes with the overall match result riding on the outcome.

The first, second and third extra holes were halved to some very good golf, but the pair held their nerve and showed their mettle, winning their match on the fourth extra hole with a conceded par to confirm the victory for Worlebury.

In Saturday’s Men’s Roll-Up Stableford Division One was won by Lauchlen Miller with an up and down round of 34 points, one ahead of club captain Barry Saunders.

In Division Two it was former captain Graham Hewlett who took first place with 35 points, runner-up was Pete Wyatt with 34 and Dan Winter was third on countback.

Division Three was won by Phil Hawkins with the best score of the day with 36 points, one ahead of Paul Otterburn with Damon Smith three back in third.

The Division Four winner was Adrian Cunnington with 32 points, runner-up was Rich Brown and in third place was Rob Newson.
