Worlebury junior Troy Young added another trophy to his cabinet by winning the U14 Somerset County Championships at Wells with a gross 83.

That left him one shot clear of Owen Roach (Cumberwell Park) and came after Young endured a difficult start that left him nine over par after three holes.

He fought back to be six over at the turn, then had an amazing back nine of just two over par to be crowned champion.

Worlebury can boast another county winner at the other end of the playing spectrum, as Janet Fear won the SLCGA 60+ Best Gross Category.

Fear's round of 88 was good enough to give her sixth place in the 50+ category.

A full field of playing members took part in the club’s annual charity day, in 30-degree heat, in support of Bristol Mind and a Benevolent Fund for the very popular member, Andy Cooper, who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident recently.

The winners of the men’s 2-from-4 Bowmaker were Dean Hooper, Paul Lawrence, Ray Baxter and Martin Morgan with an amazing 93 points, with the three birdies and 10 pars carded by Lawrence and birdie and seven pars carded by Baxter the backbone of their score.

Two points back as runners-up were Lee Grant, Andy Nicholls, Bernard Kew and Ray Collick, with Grant’s excellent round of two birdies and nine pars the standout performance.

In the Ladies competition the team of Hazel Cox, Janet Jamieson, Carol Miles and Patricia Smith combined to score 86 points, five clear of Sue and Katherine Sokol, Helen Clark and Sally Dawkins.

The nearest the pins were won by Audrey Cowlin (12th), Cris Clark (2nd) and Lee Grant (6th) and Tour player Matt Blackman helped out on the Beat the Pro competition won by John Shaw, as the generosity of the Worlebury members saw a substantial amount raised for both charitable causes.

Worlebury beat Wincanton 5-0 in the Somerset Bowl, with Tom Dancey and Troy Young recording convincing wins on their debuts.

Ryan Jones and Dancey won 8&7, James Marshall and Young 8&6 and Simon Dempsey and Dan Bovingdon 6&4, while Mick Keen and Alix Kew and Mickey Nicholls and Keri Allchurch both won one up.

The team face Long Sutton or Farrington Park in the quarter-finals.
