Worlebury reach the final of the county Pickeridge Bowl competition

Pride of place at Worlebury Golf Club goes to the Pickeridge Bowl team, who have reached the final of the trophy.

Also, The Royals have clinched their second Avalon League title in successive seasons and the juniors, who have reached the final of the county Knockout Trophy.

The Pickeridge Bowl, a five-man scratch singles competition, is one of the county’s premier events. Worlebury played brilliantly to beat a strong Mendip side at the neutral venue of Salford by 3.5 to 1.5.

Jim Walton, first out, played well but lost on the 18th. The strong middle order of Alex Winn, Lewys Charles and Josh Freeman all had comfortable wins, making Simon Dempsey’s half surplus to requirements.

Their opponents will be the winners of the Enmore/Burnham and Berrow tie at a venue and date to be decided.

The Royals, under John Melwani’s leadership, after a thrashing in their opening match, played consistently well thereafter and recorded several fine wins to take the league title with comparative ease.

The juniors beat Enmore 3-0 in the semi-final of the singles knockout. The team, consisting of junior captain Ryan Thrupp, Mikey Nichols and Alex Chandler, made home advantage count to record a comfortable win.

Their opponents are unknown at this stage, but they will go into to the final in a confident mood.

The juniors held their 36-hole club championship which saw Jack Partridge winning the gross and Ryan Thrupp the nett event.

Unfortunately, things look bleak for Graham Hewlett’s team in Avalon Division 3 and two big wins in their last two home games are required for them to have any hope of avoiding relegation.

The club hosted the annual Bone Cancer Research Trust charity day which was organised with its usual precision by Sue and Andy Collard and their team.

The day is held in the memory of their daughter, Mary, who died from the disease in 2012. An amazing sum in excess of £11,000 was raised and Sue and Andy would like to thank everyone who made the day possible with their help on the day.

Hornets Rugby Club fully supported the event and entered four teams, one of which took first prize with 127 points (M Parker, D Nettleton, S Clapp and G Davis).

Runners-up were R Berry, S Fawcett, J Shaw and C Camper with 124. Third were D Brown, S Cowgill, J Flanagan and T Isaac with 122.

Countback was needed to decide the fourth and fifth places with the team of J Crandon, B Dolbear, M Puddy and D Collard, edging out A Marshman, G Griffiths, J Allen and J Marshall.

Tom Main won the Pro Trohy final with an excellent nett 64. Ryan Jones, with a nett 67, was runner-up, pipping Pete Cornish and Malcolm Summers on countback.

Ron Ganfield won the midweek Stableford, his 44 points edging out assistant head greenkeeper, Paul Healy on countback. Ganfield was rewarded with a handicap reduction which saw him finally elevated into the Second Division.

Alex Chandler took third place on countback from fellow junior Mikey Nicholls, both bagging 42 points.

Ladies’ captain, Michelle James, hosted the section’s annual away day at Thornbury, which was a great success. The winners were Ginette Bright and Jan Simms with 42 points. Julie Stafford and Eunice McAdams came second with 40 points, beating Lorna Macivor and Angie Bagley on countback.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Katherine Sokol and Sue Kinch. It was announced that long-standing member, former captain and stalwart of the ladies’ section, Janet Jamieson, is to be the next president.

A good win was recorded by the mixed section when they travelled to renew friendships with Brean. A 4.5 to 3.5 win saw the Breanbury Trophy return to Worlebury.

Lynne Johnson lifted the Hon Sec’s Cup with 38 points. Maxine Gardiner was runner-up on countback from Pauline Smith, Lisa Griffiths and Louise Goodrum.

Lady members Jan Simms, Janet Jamieson and Marnie Sweet held three car boot sales recently and raised £425 for the lady captain’s charity.

Seniors’ captain Ron Stevens, hosted his charity day. Terry Westwood won the first prize beating Frank Woolman on countback, both netting 41 points. Malcolm Summers, a point adrift, came third beating Pete Gilpin, Tony Western and Gareth Richards on countback.

Ron thanked everyone for their participation and generosity with a tidy sum being raised for the captain’s charity.

Wells were the visitors in the seniors’ latest social match and after an enjoyable contest, honours were even. There were big wins for Ron Stevens/Gerry Miles; Roger Leaver/Nick Ryan and Brian Matthews/Mike Strang. Keri Allchurch, making his seniors debut and partnering John Ratajczak, played his part in recording a fine 2&1 win.

Weston seniors played a Bowmaker competition, requiring two players from teams of three to score on every hole.

This fun event was won by a huge margin by the team of Neil Horsfield, Steven Edwards and David Holder with 83 points, beating second placed Robin Webb, Nick Bohin and Fred Donbavand, who carded 77 points, as did Derek Cook, Victor Bush and Allan Tucker, who lost out on countback.

In ladies’ news, Sue Andow had her handicap cut by three shots following an amazing Stableford score of 47 points to win the Auchterader Quaich.

The runner-up, also with a handicap reduction, was Lynn Perry with 40, followed by three players on 36. Kayleigh Davey, Angela Cook and Jan Bishop were third, fourth and fifth on countback.

There were two outstanding rounds in the Wedmore monthly Stableford.

In Division 1, Tim Harris had three birdies and three bogies in his level par round of 70, which equated to 41 points to win by three points from Daryl Cornelius, who in turn was a point ahead of Richard Weight in third place.

Highest points score of the day came in Division 3 where Bradley Speller amassed 42 points to win the division by five points clear of a group of four players on 37. Best of these on countback was David Bates, with Liam Cann taking third spot.

Division 2 also needed countback, this time to sort out first and second places after Tom Bennett and Dave King both finished on 38 points. A par on the final hole was just enough to give Bennett first place. David Flack took third place on 34.

In the Ladies Section, Trish Phelps had the outstanding round, scoring 37 points to beat Carol Horsley into second place by 3 points.

In the ladies’ Stableford, round of the day came from Jane Midgley, the only player under par with 38 points. Ruth Pearson took second place on countback with 36 points, ahead of Ange Webber, up in the prizes again.

Trish Phelps is another lady playing well at the moment, taking fourth place with 35, ahead of Helen Tanswell in fifth place on 34.

Division Two produced the best scoring of the day in Brean’s monthly Stableford, including the only player to reach 40 points, Nigel Hodges, who took top spot.

He finished one point ahead of Ron Vine, while third-placed Trevor Pitt’s 38 points would have probably seen him successful in the other two divisions.

Mel Brown also scored 38 points as he led the way in Division 3, but only after beating Tony Slade on a countback over the back nine. Division 1 was a low-scoring affair with just 35 points being good enough for Phil Hodgson to win after another countback with Stuart Wills.

Mel Brown won his second event of the weekend when he secured the Super Series Stableford with a 43-point total. He won by three from John Cullinan, who was one better than the current points table leader Steve Martin, who completed his third top three finish in a row in the Super Series as he took third with 39.

The surname of Hurrell remained at the head of the seniors’ leaderboard for the second week running, but this time the winning round came from Bob Hurrell.

Bob produced a stunning 45 point scorecard to win the Over-65s Shield and his win followed younger brother Roger’s success last week at the away day. The winning card showed no less than four nett eagles on it, each adding four points to his total, which led to a handicap reduction of two strokes being applied at the end of play.

Runner-up to Hurrell was Mike Drayton on 42 and he was three clear of Barrie Tucker in third on 39.

The seniors were the victors of their annual match against the ladies, which was played over 11 holes with the seniors prevailing by two points overall.

Joe Selway won his first competition since joining Brean as he took the midweek Stableford with a spectacular 44 points. He was four points clear of his nearest challenger Mike Smith.

Smith just held off Gail Mason as she took third, but Mason did have the consolation of sharing the twos pot with Selway.
