Yattwell under-14s secured a wonderful 40-17 win at Newton Abbott in their first combined tour of Devon on Sunday.

The high-flying teenagers came up against a big, well-drilled side still buzzing from winning a Sevens tournament the previous weekend.

But Yattwell, having built on their talent throughout the season to believe they can compete with anyone, opened the scoring when a wide pass by Newton was well read by winger Tyler Meekhams who tore up the pitch.

Dragged down a few metres short he managed to pop the ball out of the tackle to supporting inside centre Charlie Hayatt to score under the posts.

Five minutes later from back inside their own half, Yattwell secured good ball and proceeded to move it wide to winger Mo Sayce who scorched round the chasing defenders to add a second try beneath the posts.

Yattwell’s third try came two minutes later when a brilliant jackal by flanker Ned Hill saw him burst through a number of tackles before off-loading to Hayatt who showed great footwork to avoid the opposition’s clutches and score.

Four minutes later and Yattwell were back on the attack with the ball finding its way out wide to Hayatt who duly stepped through and round the defenders to score his hat-trick.

The final play of the half saw Yattwell pressing hard through their forwards to drive the ball over the line, with number eight Phil Clarke claiming the score to make it 35-0 at half-time.

Newton Abbott opened their account two minutes after the restart with a well-worked try and followed this with two more in the next 15 minutes as Yattwell struggled to maintain the same structure as the first half.

Yattwell never stopped, though, and with five minutes to play they produced their try of the game as a scrum on their own 22 was popped out to fly-half Tom Stafford who generated momentum before off-loading to the rampaging Hill.

Once stopped he got the ball back to Stafford who passed to the ever-present supporting flanker Sam Bown who took the ball forward before getting it to Clarke.

He then drove forwards through a number of defenders before popping it out of the tackle to centre Fergus McMeel who just had enough left in the tank to make it to the line.

The last couple of minutes saw Newton Abbott score but a willingness to play had secured the win for Yattwell.
