FORMER England international cricketer Marcus Trescothick met children at a Somerset primary school this week to teach them about being a good sport.

Youngsters from St Joseph’s Primary School in Oxford Road, Burnham, welcomed the cricket legend and England women’s cricketer Caroline Atkins as part of a programme called Chance To Shine run by Marylebone Cricket Club in its spirit of cricket scheme.

The scheme aims to teach children about the importance of fair play in sport.

The professionals gave a talk to about 100 pupils before teaching the budding cricketers about batting techniques.

Somerset star Trescothick said: “Wanting to win whilst playing with dignity and enjoying the game is what I play cricket for, so it is good to see that message being used in schools.”

Ms Atkins said: “The kids were brilliant. It was great to see them finish the game and go and shake each others’ hands.

“Cricket really does lead the way in fair play. We’ve got some really good role models within the game which help that.”
