UPHILL Badminton Club saw their B, D and E teams in action this week.

The B team played their first match in Division 1, having won promotion last season. They were home to Nailsea & Yatton A, and gave a creditable performance, despite losing a hard fought match 7-2.

The team of Ellie Jewell, Wai Cheung, Steph Hadley, Brian Hadley, Denise Burton (captain) and Rob Morray all played well. The evening started with Wai and Ellie losing the first mixed rubber and Brian and Steph losing a hard fought second mixed.

The third Uphill mixed pair of Denise and Rob then beat Steve Tripp and Cathy Alexander. Uphill then lost all three ladies’ matches.

All the men’s rubbers were hard fought with Wai and Brian losing the first to Paul Harding & David Stafford. In the second, Wai and Rob beat Paul Harding and Steve Tripp and the final men’s saw Brian and Rob lose to David Stafford and Steve Tripp. For Nailsea & Yatton, Tess O’Shea and Allene Lane won all their rubbers.

The D team were away to Chew Valley B and won a competitive match by five rubbers to four. The team of Ellen Davis, Peter Ruberack, Emily Look, Grant Kelly (captain), Kate Robinson and Andy Potts all combined well.

In the first mixed, the experienced Peter and Ellen won comfortably. The second mixed was won by Babs Fowles (by far the best lady on the night) and Luke Joyner who beat Emily and Grant. Kate and Andy then won the third mixed. Fowles won the first and third ladies’ rubbers firstly with Lynne Joyner and then with Evelyn Newmarch.

The second ladies’ was won by Ellen & Kate. The men’s rubbers were all close. The first was won by Peter and Grant. In the second, Stuart Metcalfe and Robert Newman beat Peter and Andy. With the match standing at four rubbers each, the result went down to the last men’s match, which Grant and Andy won.

The E team, who moved up from Division 6 at the end of last season were away to Wedmore and won a close match by five rubbers to four.

This team of juniors was captained by Caroline Higgins and had Callum Grayson and Felicity Pritchard, both playing league badminton for the first time, together with Billy Fear, Emily Walker and Sourish Ganapathi.

The team performed well on this first outing and showed maturity beyond their years.

In the first mixed, Billy and Caroline came up against Pip Patch and Lynn Isgrove, but despite putting up a good fight they eventually lost. The second mixed was won by Sourish and Emily and in the final mixed, newcomers Callum and Felicity lost in three sets.

The first ladies went to Wedmore with Lynn Isgrove and Val Hart winning. The Uphill girls then took control with Caroline and Felicity winning and Emily and Felicity also triumphant. The first two men’s rubbers both went to three games, with Billy and Sourish beating Pip Patch and Geoff Barnham and then Patch and Steve Allan beating Billy and Callum.

This left the match result dependant on the last rubber between Sourish and Callum and Geoff Barnham and Steve Allan, which Uphill went on to win. The only person to win all their rubbers was Sourish Ganapathi.
