WESTON-S-MARE 0WELLING UNITED 3WITH nothing at stake now that their Blue Square future is secure, Weston manager Andy Gurney started with five of last season's youth team and they all gave good performances as the scoreline somehow flattered the visiting play-off hopefuls.Goalkeeper Luke Purnell along with Mark Armstrong and Sam Johnson in defence, Dayle Grubb in midfield and Sam Clark up front can be proud of their showing and could well be in the manager's future plans.Welling, in eighth spot in the table, were early in command, but it took them 20 minutes before Purnell had to make a superb diving save from Loui Fazackerley. At the other end, Darren Mullings, back from missing 13 games through injury, Scott Partridge and Clark wasted good chances. The breakthrough came on 37 minutes when Sam Hurrell burst down the left and crossed for Sanchez Ming to beat Purnell from 15 yards and a minute before the interval Welling struck again when Ryan Johnson scored with a superb 25-yard snap shot.Minutes into the second half, Grubb made a speedy run on the right, but unfortunately Jack Compton miskicked in front of goal with only keeper David Wilkinson to beat. On 53 minutes, Compton, changing wings, burst down the right and this time Mullings miskicked from a couple of yards out. Then Compton had a dangerous cross cut out by Wilkinson four minutes later.Weston brought on Marvin Brown for Clark and Marc McGregor for Partridge, and Grubb and Compton had efforts on target, but Welling struck again on 82 minutes when Charlie Sheringham, son of former England star Teddy, rounded Purnell and fired into the empty net.WESTON STATSGoals: Welling, Ming (37), Johnson (45), Sheringham (82).Shots on target: Weston 4, Welling 6.Shots off target: Weston 2, Welling 4.Corners: Weston 1, Welling 6.Offsides: Weston 5, Welling 3.Free kicks conceded: Weston 14, Welling 16.Referee: Matt Rushton (Pewsey, Wiltshire).
