WORLEBURY Golf Club member Zandie Lennox swept the board at the Somerset County ladies’ open at Mendip Spring.

Zandie, who currently plays off a handicap of five, but has now been cut to four, took three trophies out of the four in the competition.

She won the Cairns Cup (best gross with 78), the Jenny Hobbs Trophy for best nett (73) and the Dickinson Cup (73) on countback.

WORLEBURY professional Gary Marks held the annual pro weekend over the Bank Holiday comprising two competitions in some mixed weather.

The first event was a singles Stableford ‘with a twist’, the twist being some bizarre challenges on some holes with a myriad of odd putters and drivers, even headwear. One hole required the mandatory wearing of a crash helmet to test the skill of the field.

Other miniature and odd shaped putters on some holes attracted double points to entice players, despite all this there were some good scores recorded, and following a current trend, a past captain Jim Skinner was the best of them in Division 1 with 47 points.

Second was recent medal winner Alan Hartree on 45, followed by Kevin Marshall and Cameron McLeod in third and fourth place respectively, both scoring 44. The second division was also won on 47 points by Paul Marsh, second was Rob Field (46), followed by Barry Stone (45) and John Collinge on (44).

Sunday’s weather was a vast improvement for the three club challenge, all players having to select only three clubs plus a putter for their round, this was a team event with the best two scores from three to count.

The trio of Craig Young, Ryan Havard and Nathan Talbot shot a combined score of 87 points to take top place. Second was Stuart Fawcett, Dave Collard and Cameron McLeod on 85, followed by Dean Nute, Paul Shearing and Keith Knight, also with 85.

A special mention should also go to Geoff and Marion Nut,e who kindly fed everyone from the barbeque on the 16th hole.

In club fixtures, the Worlebury first team were in action away against Bristol and Clifton, but were narrowly beaten 3-2 in a close match at the top of the division, with Ken Hanson and Zack Shelford recording the best result a 3&2 win.

This means the side has narrowly missed out on promotion despite finishing joint top of the league.

The Worlebury Avalon side were also in action away at Windwhistle, and Mark Burland’s side came away with a 3-2 victory, to retain their place in their current division for next season with one fixture remaining,

The best results of the day coming from Rich Godwin and Nev Horne winning 4&3, as well as Graham Dougherty and Keri Allchurch on the same margin

The junior side tutored by Chris Blackman, played in the Presidents Cup a home and away double header against local club Weston. They took a 4.5-3.5 lead into the home leg at Worlebury on Sunday, where they extended the lead and came out victorious by 10 points to six.

MANY visitors and Weston Golf Club members competed for the Bleadon Bowl, a parent and child competition.

The competitive pairing of Nigel Browne and his son James took the trophy with a nett 69. Nigel was extremely complimentary of the course and the way in which it was set up in his prize-winning speech.

Results: Nigel & James Browne (Weston); Dave & Jack Radcliffe (Weston); Ben & Robert Stephens (Minchinhampton).

BURNHAM & Berrow seniors took on Farrington at Wedmore Golf Club in the semi-final of the Somerset Seniors’ Bowl.

They ran out winners by three and a half to one and a half and now face Clevedon in the final.

The winning pairs were Robin Griffiths and Graham Gregg, David Lloyd and Steve Cartwright and Gordon Mackay and Nick Agar. John Pascall and Dr Harvey Sampson got the half and Peter Amos and Alex Kidd lost by just one hole. The venue for the final is yet to be decided.

Burnham & Berrow members played for one of the oldest trophies in the club, the Kennard Cup.

The cup was first awarded in 1891, a year after the club was founded. The medal competition was dominated by low handicap players, with Jonathan Pitcher

(scratch) recording a gross 71 to lead the field. Second place went to Gareth Rees 76 (72), followed by Justin Lane 75 (73).

The playing conditions were extremely difficult at times, with heavy rain showers, and this reflected in the standard scratch of 76 (par 71).

WITH the Isle of Wedmore greens starting to recover from the previous week’s hollow tining, there were some good scores in the seniors’ monthly medal.

Best scores of the day came in Division 1 with Graham Clifford picking up third place with a nett 68. This was one shot behind runner-up Ron Barron, but they were both outshone by Calvon Poulton-Sadler, who won the division with the best score of the day, a nett 65.

In the other divisions, Eric Wallace won Division 2 with an impressive 66 which put him two shots clear of Mike Peacock on 68, with Tony Metcalfe a further shot back on 69.

Another player having an impressive run at the moment is Steve Miller and he clinched Division 3 with 69 in a close finish with David Dams and Peter Hathaway, who finished second and third respectively one shot further back.

The ladies played a three-player bowmaker for their competition which resulted in a close finish with just one point dividing the top three teams.

In third place, losing out by one point on 75 points were Cathy Olive, Deidre Wheadon and Angela Crosby. Runners-up with one point more were Hazel Gough, Vera Ireland and Annie Fry leaving Claire Biggs, Jane Hewitt and Alison Dodkin the winners on countback.

There was some fantastic scoring in the club medal. Andrew Davis won Division 3 with a superb nett 58, eight shots ahead of Terry Millard who was a shot clear of Nick Sarjant.

Not only the higher handicappers scored well as John Melwani won Division 1 with a gross 74 (63). This was five shots clear of Jim Dobbs with Rich Vowles two shots further back in third.

Division 2 was won by David Myers with 71, Derek Warn took second on 73 on countback from club captain Ian Robson. The ladies’ captain, Cathy Olive was best of a small ladies field with a level par 72.

BREAN seniors had a busy week of events as they caught up with some weather affected fixtures from earlier in the season.

In a week consisting of three matches plus a Stableford, they enjoyed two wins and one defeat. Unfortunately the defeat came in the biggest of the three games, the Seniors Somerset Bowl semi-final.

After being washed out the previous week at Worlebury, Clevedon proved too strong for the Brean team and ran out 3-2 winners.

The previous day the team had a confidence boosting 5-1 home win in the second leg of the FosseBrean Trophy against Fosseway. Trailing by two points after the first leg at Fosseway they turned on the style to end up victors overall by 7-5.

The seniors travelled to Cannington and again success was tasted as they won 3.5-2.5 to slightly soften the blow of the semi-final loss. Pat Mullholland was the winner of the seniors’ Stableford with 37 points. He beat George Stratford on countback over the last nine holes after they both scored 37 points.

Mullholland was again the winner of the Pro Shop Stableford. This time 35 points was good enough to beat Neil Barker by three.

A new Super Series event is underway with the first competition being won by Mats Mattsson with a score of 37 points, one ahead of Gordon Wheelaghan on 36.

Both Avalon League teams are completing their seasons now and the Division 2 side had a double header weekend with games on both days. They were away to Taunton Vale and won 3-2 before completing their solid 2012 campaign with an away fixture at Enmore Park.

In this game, they succumbed to their hosts by 5-0. The Division 6 side were also on the road at Frome and went down 4-1. This result leaves them potentially needing some points from their final home game to ensure their safety in the Division for next year.

Both of Brean’s PGA professionals will tee it up in the Race to Woodbury Park Championship which is the West Region PGA season-ending event in early September.

The field is made up of the top 50 in the Order of Merit following the conclusion of the West Region Championship which was played at Saunton last week. David Haines enjoyed a good closing round over the tougher east course at the North Devon venue to move up the field and finish in a tie for 21st.

This moved him up to 23rd on the Order of Merit after a steady season in the qualifying events. March didn’t play in the final event at Saunton, but will also take part in the finale after being offered a sponsors invitation to the event after just ending outside the top 50 spot.
