Review: Bounce Back Beat Record’s open night hailed a smash-hit

Punk-rock, indie and alternative music fans were treated to a plethora of songs by artists under Bounce Back Beat Record’s new label on Tuesday night.

The gig at Hy-Brasil Music Club saw lesser and well-known bands, including singer-songwriters, take to the stage to perform energetic and memorable sets - which featured guitar solos, acoustic numbers and the occasional head-banger’ hit.
People who want to break into the music industry spend years crafting their talents, in the words of my avid music’ fan friend, but the look in Joe Nuttcombe’s eye, founder of the music label, confirmed the work would pay-off soon enough.
First to take the mic was Emo Ben, a 21-year-old Bridgwater singer who is driven by pop-punk melodies, to quote his own wording.
His rendition of Panic! At The Disco’s song, Girls Girls Boys, showed-off his capabilities as a singer, which shone through after the initial nerves wore off, this made him relatable and added to his charm.

Next up was country-rock singer Aisha B, who has performed up and down the country with a helping-hand from the artist’s number-one fan, her father. A fresh face in the industry and a brilliant guitar player.
She takes influence from artists including Taylor Swift, Lana Del Ray and Guns N’ Roses, which showed as she belted out emotional, original ballets - which is hard to do, given people are not familiar with the words – but she had the audience well and truly on her side from the get-go.

The next band grabbed my attention. Poison Crow, a goth/punk ensemble from Exeter and Bristol. They have a strong social media following and their performance seemed effortless and highly addictive to watch.
Its lead singer, Sirin Bozkurt, took to the stage like a duck to water and a special mention goes to guitarist Joe Taylor who, with the group, had the audience head-banging by the end of the musicians’ set, which left many gasping for more.

Finally, alternative rock band The Proxy Youth brought energy and angst to end the night on a high. This relatively new Bristol group radiated a vibe of 1970s nostalgia, paying homage to The Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones and Nirvana.
Bounce Back’s motto is it is ‘a community for all music lovers’ which is accurate and already delivers on this front.
I look forward to see what the future has in store for the company’s budding and talented artists.
