A WELL-KNOWN local orchestra has been re-launched to reflect its growing numbers and influence.

The Winscombe Orchestra, which was first launched more than 35 years ago with a performance in the village primary school, has been renamed the West Mendip Orchestra.

The ensemble will have its first performance under its new name on November 16 at the Friends Meeting House in Oakridge Lane, Sidcot.

Since that first performance it has grown in size and stature to a full-size symphony orchestra performing major pieces of classical music.

Mark Gateshill was appointed as musical director in 2009 and it now regularly features professional soloists at its concerts and attracts players from as far afield as Wells, Bristol and Bridgwater.

Mr Gatesehill said: “The orchestra is a regional musical force with a reach and importance beyond the village where it started. The new name lets people know the scale of the orchestra’s ability and range.

“As the orchestra grows there are opportunities for competent string players. Anyone who is interested should just get in touch.”

The performance on November 16 will feature English music by Holst and Vaughan Williams.
