UNISON NORTH SOMERSET BRANCH RETIRED MEMBERS SECTION: Our New Year lunch is on January 19 at Aces restaurant, 133 High Street, Worle, at 1pm.

The next branch meeting is on February 9 in the Old Council Chamber of the Town Hall, Weston, at 2.30pm. Speaker to be confirmed.

WINSCOMBE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: The group is ploughing into the New Year with a talk on farming at 7.30pm on January 12 at the church hall. Come and see if you would like to join our group.

RAF ASSOCIATION (RAFA), WESTON BRANCH: We are kicking off the 2011 events schedule with a Fish ‘n’ Chip Supper on Saturday .

This will be followed the following week with a cheese and wine evening on January 15.

On January 22 we will be hosting a Burns Night celebrating the life and works of Robert Burns.

This event will begin at 8pm. The cost is £10 and the dress for the evening will be black tie/lounge suits.

January will be rounded off with a roast lunch on January 28 and a quiz night on January 29.

Our association is the largest single service membership organisation of current and past members of the RAF, their families, friends and those who wish to support the aims of the association.

Branches and clubs are renowned for their comradeship and friendly atmosphere - call in at Eagle House in Alexandra Parade for more details.

WESTON FLOWER ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY: The New Year luncheon on January 24 is at Worlebury Golf Club, 12noon for 12.30pm. The AGM will follow at 2pm.

WESTON ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY: For our January meeting James Bond, visiting professor at Bristol University, will be giving a talk ‘The Knights Templar’. The talk is on Tuesday, January 11, and starts at 7.30pm at our usual venue, the Victoria Methodist Church Hall, Station Road, Weston.

New members and visitors are very welcome. Visitors - £2 per meeting.

WOMEN’S SECTION, ROYAL BRITISH LEGION, WESTON BRANCH: The next meeting is on January 12 at 2.15pm in the United Reformed Church Hall in Waterloo Street – usual meeting place.

This will be our 86th birthday party. The RBL Women’s Section started in 1925.

Tea/coffee and refreshments, plus a raffle, will be provided.

Please come along to support us. All new members are made welcome.

Our meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month, with coffee mornings on the last Friday of every month, from 10.30am-12 noon.

Coffee/tea and biscuits only 50p – always in the United Reformed Church Hall.

WESTON PHILATELIC SOCIETY: At our last meeting members enjoyed Christmas pies and a glass of sherry as they revealed items of their other collections.

Phillip led with a quiz on post boxes from around the local area which only proved that most of us are not very observant.

Derek showed part of his collection of watches, Ronnie a selection of items from Air Force One (The American president’s aircraft), Graham showed some unusual British Army cap badges and Bill produced a surprise with his collection of jokers from playing cards.

Our next meeting is on January 11 in the function room of the Conservative Club, 24/26 Alexandra Parade, 6.45 for 7.15pm. The subject will be King George IV presented by Dicken Pollard.
