YET again, July begins with an overwhelming deluge of calls about unwanted, abandoned and stray cats, often with kittens ... yet we are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers. Sadly, far more calls that come into our Cats Protection Catline are from people wanting us to take in cats rather than wanting to adopt one of our lovely felines, and with only a very few cattery pens, there is very little we can do to reduce the numbers constantly being placed on our waiting list. However, we can and do offer help with neutering costs to people on low incomes, and try very hard to make cat owners realise that the ideal time to get a cat neutered is at five to six months of age before a female comes into her first season, or a male begins to go roaming in search of territory, although we are happy to help a cat in this way at any age.A neutered cat is invariably a happier, healthier and more affectionate companion animal, as the delightful cats in our care at present will only be too happy to prove when the right owner comes along ... so please ring us on 01934 613747 to find out about them, or about help with neutering costs.ANNE BUNN - Rehoming/neutering officer, Weston & District Cats Protection
