I FOUND the premise of the lead article in last week's Mercury to be somewhat short-sighted. It is absolutely necessary that the Government and the council improve the sea defences urgently. If the additional sea wall is built, it will not be the death of Weston's tourism, but if nothing is done it could be the death of the town and many of its residents. The area's largest concentration of new housing development is in Locking Castle, which is drained moorland at, and sometimes below, sea level. Some of the more traditional residential areas near the town centre are also low lying and at severe risk. Insurance premiums are already being loaded for some areas. I only hope that the Government comes up with the money and the improvements to the sea defences are carried out before there is a catastrophic flood, which wipes out large parts of the town and many lives.RACHEL MORGANBristol Road Lower, Weston
