AFTER visiting Weston last week, and looking at the changes etc since living in the area myself in the late 90s, I would just like to comment on the powers-that-be having the same sense of humour in Weston as they have in my native North East. What else can you call spending £280,000 on a piece of junk? The Silica! Whoever thought of this, and agreed to it should be called 'The Silly A**'. Why can't you people realise that things like this are a total waste of money, just like 'The Monstrosity of the North' (Angel of the North) and 'The Gherkin' in London. One Weston resident tried to defend the situation by saying that the money had to be spent on a monument. That's fine but please provide something we don't have to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol to try to make something out of it. And no, I am not a substance abuser - I work in a prison with people who have/have had a problem with substances. Maybe you should've put up a statue of one of Weston's favourite sons, John Cleese, instead, but then again maybe that is what you were doing when you put up this 'Faulty Tower'.ANTHONY WHELPTONBillingham, Cleveland
