WHEN travelling into Weston I was horrified to see the devastation done to the grass verges there. The grass has been cut so short it might as well be concrete.Doing grass cutting for safety reasons is one thing, but this kind of grass cutting is totally unnecessary, a waste of taxpayers' money and against all the advice given by your own council on helping biodiversity. To have grass verges along our road is a very good way of helping to keep our wildlife and wild flowers from disappearing. However by cutting the verges so short and so often, plus spraying weed killer, any value the verges could have is completely eradicated. The same can be said of our hedgerows. Flailing hedgerows yearly, and at this time of the year, means there are no berries for our birds in the winter. Also a lot of birds are still nesting.Nowadays there seems to be a tendency to think all grass, flowers, trees and hedges should look like a well manicured garden, but roadside verges and hedges are not gardens, they should be wildlife corridors.DOT BAKER - Westfield Drive, Backwell
