WHEN is an office not an office? When it is going to be used as a drop-in rehabilitation centre for recovering addicts. As a resident living close to the former guesthouse in Whitecross Road, which is now going to accommodate 'offices', I am furious with the double standards demonstrated by local councillors. They actively campaigned (and rightly so) against an application for an existing retailer in Whitecross Road to obtain a full sex shop licence, yet failed to inform the same residents that the planning application this summer for a change of use from a guesthouse to 'offices' was from Western Counselling, which offers a service to alcoholics, drug users and other recovering addicts. Most complaints against the granting of a full sex shop licence stated it would be inappropriate to accommodate such a business in an improving largely residential area where many families reside and where new businesses have invested substantially. How can the council argue that locating a rehabilitation centre for recovering addicts within 100 yards of the retailer, whose application was denied, does not meet the same criteria? Why did our local councillor not inform us of the true intentions for the 'offices'?If the town council was able to ascertain the true use of the building and raise an objection to the planning application (Weston Mercury article 22/9/06), our ward councillors should also have been aware. Why was this application not called in for consideration by the West Area Planning Committee?I urge the community to rally together and take action. A petition objecting against the suitability of relocating the counselling centre to 18 Whitecross Road is available in local retailers. Please sign it and send a letter of objection to David Turner, chief planning officer at North Somerset Council.SALLY MILTONClifton Road, Weston
