THE Mercury has sponsored the town's Flower Power initiative for which we are grateful, but isn't it high time we stopped talking the town down? The headline "Seafront sell-out" seemed like good news until I discovered it was about a guesthouse considering conversion into flats!North Somerset Council has made mistakes but to be fair it is not largely down to the council that long-stay visitors are diminishing. Many seaside resorts have the same problem, and in Weston, cheap flights to the Mediterranean are only half-an-hour's drive away.In contrast, this town is an excellent centre for a visitor wanting to tour the area and sample its unique attractions. The Severn Bore, Forest of Dean, Berkeley Castle, Bristol, Bath, Wells, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, the West Somerset Railway, all are within an easy two hours drive. This must surely count for something when it comes to the long-stay tourist. However, we must also make Weston more attractive. Trees and flowers are important. But redeveloping those scruffy, derelict sites is paramount. Meanwhile, let's concentrate on the positive aspects of this town.ROGER H BROWN - Jocelin Drive, Worle
