FURTHER to M J Howe's letter last week, I have been fighting for the future of Birnbeck Pier since 1996. The RNLI has had a presence on Birnbeck Island from November 5 1882 so the two are inextricably linked. Therefore I repeat that should the RNLI leave the pier it would be the "last nail in the coffin" which, from a personal view, would be a disaster. Few seaside resorts have one pier let alone two! So support the campaign to save Birnbeck Pier and Island, which would, in turn, mean that the Lifeboat would be safe for years to come.MIKE DAVIES- National Piers Society Committee MemberBaytree Road, Weston
