TAKING the hugely successful spy franchise in a whole new direction, The Bourne Legacy (15) picks up the saga where Jason Bourne left off.
The film begins following the dismemberment of the CIA’s black ops Operation Blackbriar by Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), and sees his mantle taken on by rising star Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).
In the wake of the carnage of Blackbriar’s collapse, the CIA decides to terminate all other black ops programmes – including the field agents involved in them.
Aaron Cross (Renner), an agent from the terminated Operation Outcome, escapes an execution attempt and vows to expose the crimes of his superiors, led by Eric Byer (Edward Norton).
Helping him in his mission is Outcome scientist Dr Martha Shearling (Rachel Weisz), who also avoids narrowly being killed by the CIA.
What ensues is a dramatic sequence of events as Cross and Shearling battle against their former bosses to expose the machinations of the sinister Byer and his cohorts.
Tony Gilroy, narrative director of the first three Bourne movies, takes the director’s seat for the first time, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn all reprise their roles.
The Bourne Legacy is out in cinemas tomorrow (Fri).
