The story is based on Federico Fellini's 1963 film called 8 1/2 .
Like the original and subsequent musicals that followed, the new film directed by Rob Marshall, focuses on the problems of the suave Italian film director, Guido Contini.
Played by Daniel Day-Lewis, he is struggling to complete his ninth film, for which he does not have a script, while also juggling the seven women in his life.
His wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his costume designer and confidante (Judi Dench), his mother (Sophie Loren), an American journalist (Kate Hudson) and a prostitute (Fergie of Black Eyed Peas fame).
His desperate search for inspiration sparks memories of his past stormy relationships
