ONE of the most successful superhero franchises gets a reboot with a distinctly British twist to it.

The Amazing Spider-Man (12A) is released nationwide on Tuesday, and features up and coming British actor Andrew Garfield for the first time as radioactive superhero Peter Parker.

In the latest instalment in the Marvel Comics series starts with teenage outcast Parker trying to unravel the mystery of his own past and winning the heart of his high school crush Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone).

He discovers a mysterious briefcase belonging to his father, who abandoned him when he was a child.

The clue, which could shed light on his identity as Spider-Man, leads him to his father’s former partner, Dr Curtis Connors (played by Rhys Ifans).

But there is more to Mr Connors than meets the eye – thanks to a scientific accident he in fact becomes the vicious and vengeful super villain The Lizard.

Battling him on one side and the police on the other, will Peter’s romance with Gwen ever get off the ground?

Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man is also available in 3D, and features Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Sally Field and Irrfan Khan.
