PUBLISHED: 08:58 24 November 2018
An English folklore legend has returned to cinema screens in Weston-super-Mare, and Mercury readers will win tickets to the action.
Robin Hood was released in cinemas yesterday (Wednesday).
Playing the famous archer is Kingsman’s Taron Egerton as the war-hardened crusader and his Moorish commander Little John (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown.
Coming eight years after the Russell Crowe-led feature, this new edition serves as an origin story for Robin of Loxley, as he starts his campaign against the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Ben Mendelsohn.
Also starring is Eve Hewson as Maid Marian, Tim Minchin as Friar Tuck, Jamie Dornan as Will Scarle and Paul Anderson portraying Guy of Gisborne.
The all-star cast is backed up by those behind the camera, with Oscar-winner Leonardo Di Caprio listed as a producer while Otto Bathurst, who has directed episodes of Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror, is helming the film.
Robin Hood has been a popular folk figure since the 14th century and his tales have been retold in literature and film in various guises over the past 600 years.
A common theme of the adaptations depicts Robin as a champion of the people fighting against injustice.
Traditionally dressed in Lincoln green, he is said to have robbed from the rich and given to the poor.
Ridley Scott’s 2010 film was a huge commercial success, raking in more than £300million at the box office.
Robin Hood is screening at various times at the Odeon, in The Centre, throughout the week.
The Mercury has teamed up with the Odeon to offer three readers a pair of tickets each to a showing of their choice.
