A legendary boxing franchise returns this week for its latest instalment, promising knockout action as one of the series’ most famous rivalries is reignited.
Michael B Jordan stars as Creed II hits cinemas tomorrow (Friday), and the Mercury has three pairs of tickets to give away to fight fans eager to enjoy the next chapter in the Rocky series.
The film centres on the career of Adonis Creed, whose late father Apollo was a legendary boxer and shared both the ring and a friendship with Rocky Balboa – played by Sylvester Stallone – in the unmistakable collection of films in the 1970s and 80s.
The first iteration of the spin-off debutted in 2015, as Adonis stepped out of his father’s shadow and into the ring to fight world champ Pretty Ricky Conlan – played by recently-retired Scouse brawler Tony Bellew.
Creed, trained by Rocky, loses a close fight but wins plenty of admirers to set up some huge clashes in the future and honour his father’s name.
Apollo was a world heavyweight champion having conquered all challengers, and in Rocky IV he stepped up to take on the Russian giant Ivan Drago – played by legendary hard man Dolph Lundgren – but tragedy struck as a vicious barrage of punches caused him to die in the ring.
More than three decades after the 1985 film, the rivalry is reignited with Adonis hoping to avenge his father’s death by facing Drago’s equally fearsome son Viktor – but will he suffer the same fate of his father?
