AN AWARD-WINNING band which was catapulted to fame after appearing in a hit movie will visit Weston in July.The Grimethorpe Colliery Band will perform at The Playhouse on July 9.The story of Grimethorpe has become legendary since forming in 1917 and being highlighted in the 1995 film Brassed Off.When Elgar Howarth joined the band in the 1970s he transformed its entire repertoire giving the musicians a unique sound and style which has helped them capture the hearts of music fans everywhere.In 1984, at the height of the miners' strike, Grimethorpe won the British Open Brass Band Championship.In 1992, when pits were being closed down and members of the band faced unemployment, the musicians vowed to reach the finals of the National Brass Band Championships.The final details of the pit closures were announced just days before the competition at The Royal Albert Hall but the band went on to emerge triumphant.Tickets, priced £15, are available from the box office on 01934 645544.
