An emerging Weston-super-Mare band will perform on one of Bristol’s biggest stages as part of a competition this weekend – and the members hope people will go along to support them.

TYPE is the only group not from Bristol to be competing in the final of The Underdog, a battle of the bands-style contest.

The group, made up of four 18-year-olds from Weston, has already got through a preliminary round and semi-final to reach the finale at the O2 Academy on Saturday.

Frontman Harry Binding, who is one of the original members, said: “This is the second time we’ve entered the competition.

“We are buzzing to be in the final and are so grateful to our mates who have turned up each round. Competition is high but we would really like to win.”

The Underdog contest is in its third year and gives the winner the chance to pick up £1,000.

This year, 30 bands have performed 25-minute sets of original music and only six have reached the final.

As part of their time in the contest, TYPE have recorded their first single, helped by a mentoring scheme.

TYPE was formed by Harry as a two-piece act when he was 13 years old, but five years later, there is a drummer and guitarist on board.

The current line up featuring Harry, Kieran Green, Jay Jay O’Shea and Andy Delaney have now been together for a year.

Harry said: “A lot of good bands have gone out already.

“In the final, the decision will be made up of 50 per cent votes from the people who turn up on the night and 50 per cent from the judges. We will be judged on the performance and songwriting.

“We want as many people as possible to go and support us.”

A spokesman for Synthetica Events Group, which has organised The Underdog, said: “One of our favourite local acts; this four piece coming out of Weston has shown talent beyond their years.

“Incredible songwriting and stage presence to back it up, these guys have an excellent chance of breaking into the national music scene.”

The final will be at the O2 Academy on Saturday at 6.30pm.
