One of the UK’s most popular funk and soul DJ’s will return to Weston-super-Mare this summer after a successful sell-out show.

Craig Charles will bring his funk and soul club night to the Tropicana, in Marine Parade, for a beach party on July 13.

The actor, host and broadcaster, will be back following his recent show at the venue in February and will bring his radiant character and collection of sun-soaked tunes for an unmissable evening.

The DJ has been broadcasting on BBC Radio 6 Music for 10 years with his primetime Saturday night show.

With an assortment of classic gems and emerging artists, Charles has garnered global support as one of the UK’s foremost funk and soul pioneers.

He said: “Since its inception I have been interested in all varieties of soul and funk music, without imposing any barriers.

“I am just as enthusiastic about fresh new talent as I am about the classic artists from the golden age of the 1960s and 1970s.

“When the BBC asked me to do a radio show I only had one condition, it had to be this genre otherwise I wasn’t interested.”

Charles performs regularly throughout the UK and has a monthly residency at Band On The Wall, in Manchester, often bringing a guest artist with him.

Charles has played at numerous festivals such as Love Box, Parklife and Wychwood festival.

Last year, he played to more than 10,000 people at the world famous Arcadia and Shangri-La stages at Glastonbury.

The DJ began his career as a contemporary poet on the British cabaret circuit and soon went on to tour with Teardrop Explodes with his work.

He then branched into the acting industry when he joined BBC Two’s science fiction comedy Red Dwarf as Liverpudlian slob Dave Lister in 1988.

In 1998, he joined the hit gladiator-style show Robot Wars where he presented it from series two to seven.

He was also a long-standing cast member of the popular soap, Coronation Street, and played philandering taxi driver Lloyd Mullaney, who was also a soul DJ.

Charles will play at the Tropicana on July 13 from 8pm-1am.

Tickets, priced £20, are available from tropicanaweston.co.uk/upcoming-events or on 01934 626982.
